Between you and me

๐Ÿ”บ A common mistake in spoken English is to say โ€˜between you and Iโ€™, as in this sentence:

โŒ Don't say: Itโ€™s a tiny bit boring, between you and I.

โœ… Say: Itโ€™s a tiny bit boring, between you and me.

๐Ÿ”บ In standard English, itโ€™s grammatically correct to say โ€˜between you and meโ€™ and incorrect to say โ€˜between you and Iโ€™.

๐Ÿ”บ The reason for this is that a preposition such as between should be followed by an objective pronoun (such as me, him, her, and us) rather than a subjective pronoun (such as I, he, she, and we).

Remember: the correct expression is โ€˜between you and meโ€™

๐Ÿ”นBand 5.5: The results of the survey were okay, but not very reliable. The big problem was the low response rate. Some people were happy with the new policy, while others were sad. The questions were easy to answer, but some of them were boring.

๐Ÿ”นBand 6.5: The findings of the study were satisfactory, but not very conclusive. The sizable challenge was the limited sample size. Some participants were pleased with the new initiative, while others were disappointed. The tasks were straightforward to complete, but some of them were monotonous.

๐Ÿ”นBand 7: The implications of the research were acceptable, but not very convincing. The considerable difficulty was the restricted scope of the analysis. Some respondents were content with the new scheme, while others were disheartened. The activities were simple to perform, but some of them were dull.

๐Ÿ”นBand 8/9: The outcomes of the investigation were sufficient, but not very persuasive. The substantial obstacle was the confined range of the data. Some subjects were delighted with the new program, while others were distressed. The operations were uncomplicated to execute, but some of them were repetitive.

Grammar Tip

๐Ÿ”† Percentage, proportion, number and amount are the most common terms used to describe the quantities shown in graphs and charts in Academic Writing Task 1.

๐Ÿ”นThe percentage of people who read print books decreased.
๐Ÿ”นThe proportion of people who read e-books was larger/smaller in 2013 than in 2012.
๐Ÿ”นThe number of people who prefer e-books increased.
๐Ÿ”นTeenagers spend a smaller amount on books than older people.

โ˜๏ธ For number you must have a plural, countable noun following. Remember also that amount should be used for uncountable nouns.

Description Structures
โœณ๏ธWhen responding to description questions, you need to begin with a lead-in phrase. (This is an example of a linking device I redundant language). Possible lead-in phrases include the following:

๐Ÿ”ธOK then...
๐Ÿ”ธRight, ok...
๐Ÿ”ธAlright...
๐Ÿ”ธWell...
๐Ÿ”ธWell, you know...
๐Ÿ”ธWell first of all...
๐Ÿ”ธ Actually...

โœณ๏ธWe can add a "pointing phrase" next, to signal to the listener that the first point is coming. (This is another example of a linking device / redundant language.)

๐Ÿ”น...the first thing I should mention is that...
๐Ÿ”ธ...the point Iโ€™d like to begin with is that...
๐Ÿ”ธ...I could start off by saying that...
๐Ÿ”ธ...my initial point would be that...
๐Ÿ”ธ...I need to start off by pointing out that...
๐Ÿ”ธ...the main thing you need to know is that...
๐Ÿ”ธ...I suppose I should begin by highlighting the fact that...
๐Ÿ”ธ...you may (or may not) be aware that in fact...

IELTS SPEAKING Part 1 : Shopping

Do you often go shopping for personal items?

๐Ÿ™Ž๐Ÿปโ€โ™‚๏ธ
When I can afford it yes โ€ฆ my college is in the city centre and I do a lot of window shopping โ€ฆ but being a student Iโ€™m on a tight budget so I have to be careful with money โ€ฆ

Are there many shops where you live?

๐Ÿ™Ž๐Ÿปโ€โ™‚๏ธ
Weโ€™ve got a few local shops nearby and a few independent stores but none of the big high street names โ€ฆ I have to go into town for them โ€ฆ

Do you enjoy shopping?

๐Ÿ™Ž๐Ÿปโ€โ™‚๏ธ
It depends โ€ฆ I hate it when the sales are on โ€ฆ crowds of people all trying to snap up a bargain โ€ฆ I find it all a bit stressful โ€ฆ I also get annoyed when shop assistants try to give me the hard sell when all I want to do is look around โ€ฆ

๐Ÿ—ฃIELTS Speaking part 2

Describe a time when you bought something for someone. You should say

when this was
what is was you bought
who you bought it for
and say how you felt about buying it for them.

๐Ÿ—ฃIโ€™d like to tell you about the time โ€ฆ about four years ago โ€ฆ my husband and I bought a computer for our daughter โ€ฆ she was about to go to university and weโ€™d promised her we would treat her to one โ€ฆ at the time there had been a big advertising campaign for the latest Apple Macbook and our daughter was very keen to have one โ€ฆ she kept telling us they were value for money โ€ฆ even though they seemed very expensive to us โ€ฆ anyway we tried to shop around to see if we could pick up a bargain โ€ฆ this was in the middle of the summer sales and wherever you went prices were being slashed on big brand names โ€ฆ but unfortunately not Apple products โ€ฆ we ended up having to pay the full price โ€ฆ I remember my daughter justifying the cost by pointing out how nice the Apple carrier bag was โ€ฆ but it was lovely to see her so excited and the customer service sheโ€™s received during the four years sheโ€™s had it has been excellent โ€ฆ so it was value for money after all โ€ฆ

๐Ÿ—ฃ IELTS Speaking part 3

Examiner: Do you think we will stop using paper money in the future?

๐Ÿ™Ž๐Ÿปโ€โ™‚๏ธ
I think itโ€™s almost certain โ€ฆ at the moment itโ€™s still possible to pay in cash but Iโ€™m sure this will change โ€ฆ the problem is people are more likely to get into debt and run up a credit card bill when this happens.

Examiner: How do companies encourage the consumer to spend their money?

๐Ÿ™Ž๐Ÿปโ€โ™‚๏ธ Well
โ€ฆ a recent development in my country is something called โ€˜Black Fridayโ€™ where people are encouraged to shop until they drop and buy the latest must-have products โ€ฆ then there are things like loyalty cards to get the customer back in the store โ€ฆ

Examiner: What do you think shops need to do to create a positive shopping experience?

๐Ÿ™Ž๐Ÿปโ€โ™‚๏ธ
The main thing for me is not being pressurised to buy โ€ฆ I appreciate that shop assistants are probably on commission but if Iโ€™m looking for clothes for example I like to take my time โ€ฆ to try something on โ€ฆ and to ask for help if I need it

Speaking Interview(IELTS)

Interviewer: Can you tell me a little about your family?
Student: "Sure. My nuclear family is large; it includes my parents and my three siblings. My extended family is also quite large. We are a very happy family and we often gather together to discuss any problems and share time."

Interviewer: How important is family to you, and why?
Student: "Family is very important to me because family members always help each other in difficult situations. For example, when I was broke, my family supported and helped me."

Interviewer: Do you spend a lot of time with your family? Why or why not?
Student: "I used to spend a lot of time with my family when I was a child, but now I have a job and need to focus on my own work. Because of that, I can't be with my family as much as I used to."

Interviewer: Do you think the roles of family members have changed compared to the past?
Student: "Yes, it has changed. I remember my father was the breadwinner, but now he is retired. Because of that, I have to take on more responsibility and support my family."

Interviewer: How do you think technology has affected family relationships?
Student: "In my opinion, technology has affected family relationships negatively. In the past, when we had problems, we would discuss them face-to-face. Now, we often rely on phones and text messages, which makes us feel a bit distant from each other."

Interviewer: What values do you think are important to maintain strong family ties?
Student: "There are many values important for maintaining strong family ties, but the most crucial one is to respect each other. When family members respect one another, it creates a supportive and loving environment."
