🔆 Percentage, proportion, number and amount are the most common terms used to describe the quantities shown in graphs and charts in Academic Writing Task 1.

🔹The percentage of people who read print books decreased.
🔹The proportion of people who read e-books was larger/smaller in 2013 than in 2012.
🔹The number of people who prefer e-books increased.
🔹Teenagers spend a smaller amount on books than older people.

☝️ For number you must have a plural, countable noun following. Remember also that amount should be used for uncountable nouns.

🔺 Before an infinitive, use ‘agree’, not ‘accept’.

▪️ She agreed to come. (NOT She accepted to come.)

🔺 You cannot put a that-clause immediately after agree or disagree. For example, you cannot write ‘I agree that smoking should be banned.’ Instead, you have to write ‘I agree with the view / opinion / argument that smoking should be banned’.

Examples:

▪️I disagree with your opinion that cars should not be allowed in city centres.

▪️Do you agree with the statement that education should be free for all?

🔺 Before a pronoun or a noun with a determiner (e.g. articles, demonstratives and possessives), we use any of.

▪️ I don’t like any of them.

🔺 Before a noun with no determiner we use any.

Example:

▪️ Any child can learn to swim. (NOT Any of child can learn to swim.)

🔺 Already is an adverb of time. It means ‘sooner than expected’. All ready means all + ready.

▪️She has already arrived.
▪️ I have already sent the report.

Between you and me

🔺 A common mistake in spoken English is to say ‘between you and I’, as in this sentence:

❌ Don't say: It’s a tiny bit boring, between you and I.

✅ Say: It’s a tiny bit boring, between you and me.

🔺 In standard English, it’s grammatically correct to say ‘between you and me’ and incorrect to say ‘between you and I’.

🔺 The reason for this is that a preposition such as between should be followed by an objective pronoun (such as me, him, her, and us) rather than a subjective pronoun (such as I, he, she, and we).

Remember: the correct expression is ‘between you and me’
