There is a number of federal and state laws that regulate pet ownership in the US. Some of them, though, might sound a bit ridiculous.

1. California: It's illegal to own more than one guinea pig at a time unless you're a licensed breeder.
2. Florida: It is against the law to tie an alligator to a fire hydrant.
3. Massachusetts: It is illegal to own more than four cats without a kennel license.
4. North Carolina: It is illegal to keep a pet raccoon, even if it was raised in captivity.
5. Virginia: It is unlawful to have a pet chicken in certain localities unless you have a permit.
