🚀 Ethereum Foundation Announces Mekong Testnet Shutdown

According to PANews, the Ethereum Foundation announced on its official blog that the Mekong development network, initially designed to provide a testing ground for wallet developers and instill confidence in stakers regarding future Pectra changes, will cease operations on March 7, 2025. The Pectra network upgrade has been activated on Ethereum's Sepolia and Holesky testnets, which are now available for testing Pectra upgrade features.

Developers of applications and tools are encouraged to use Sepolia for testing applications, smart contracts, and other EVM functionalities. Its licensed validator set offers a stable testing environment, and many local development environments allow testing against a copy of the Ethereum mainnet state.

For stakers and infrastructure providers focused on protocol-level testing, it is recommended to wait for the finalization of the Holesky testnet or monitor announcements on Ethereum's R&D Discord for alternative testing locations. For validator setup testing, stakers should also consider using the Ephemery testnet, which resets weekly and supports lightweight end-to-end testing of the validator lifecycle.

🚀 Ethereum's L2 Security and Finalization Roadmap Outlined by Vitalik Buterin

According to Foresight News, Ethereum founder Vitalik Buterin has published a detailed article titled "A Simple L2 Security and Finalization Roadmap," outlining three key directions for optimizing Ethereum's Layer 2 (L2) security and finalization.

The first focus is on expanding data capacity. The Pectra upgrade will increase Blob space to six units, with plans to extend it to 72 units by the end of the year through the Fusaka upgrade, or incrementally to 12-24 units. This expansion aims to meet the transaction throughput demands of L2.

Secondly, a hybrid proof system is proposed to achieve rapid finalization. This system employs a 2/3 multi-signature mechanism, combining optimistic proofs, zero-knowledge (ZK) proofs, and trusted execution environment (TEE) hardware proofs. Immediate finalization occurs when both ZK and TEE validations are successful; otherwise, a seven-day optimistic challenge period is required. The security committee can urgently upgrade proof logic, subject to a 30-day delay, balancing immediate finalization with attack resistance.

Lastly, the roadmap suggests building a unified ZK proof aggregation layer. This involves standardizing a proof aggregation protocol across the ecosystem, allowing multiple applications to share the cost of a single proof, such as 500,000 Gas. This approach significantly reduces ZK verification expenses and promotes the adoption of L2 and privacy protocols.

The roadmap's goal is to achieve cross-chain bridging within one hour using a short-term hybrid verification mechanism, while reducing costs. In the long term, the aim is to gradually eliminate reliance on TEE, ultimately establishing an efficient, secure, and trustless L2 ecosystem.

🚀 Ethereum's Recent Surge: Analyzing the Factors Behind the Price Increase

According to PANews, the recent significant rise in Ethereum's price has prompted questions about its connection to the Pectra upgrade. However, the upgrade is more of a follow-up to the Cancun upgrade, focusing on underlying optimizations rather than groundbreaking innovations.

From a technical standpoint, the Pectra upgrade includes four Ethereum Improvement Proposals (EIPs) aimed at enhancing Ethereum's stability and efficiency. These include EIP-7044 for standardizing status expiration, EIP-7524 for redefining fuel limits, EIP-7697 for optimizing transaction pipelines, and EIP-6789 for improving difficulty adjustments. These upgrades address minor issues left by the Cancun upgrade.

The real driver behind Ethereum's price movement is a recovery from excessive fear, uncertainty, and doubt (FUD). In recent months, Ethereum faced intense scrutiny, with concerns about layer 2 liquidity dispersion, comparisons with Solana's performance, and unmet expectations for layer 2 ecosystem applications. Additionally, narratives around restaking, modularity, and zk technology failed to capture value.

Despite these challenges, key facts were overlooked: DeFi's total locked value remains stable at $119 billion, the Cancun upgrade significantly reduced layer 2 costs, ETF inflows continue to strengthen, and new narratives like RWA and PayFi are primarily developing within the Ethereum ecosystem.

Ethereum's fundamentals are not as dire as market sentiment suggests. Institutional investors have recognized this imbalance. A notable example is Abraxas Capital's substantial purchase of 242,652 ETH, valued at approximately $561 million. Between May 9-14, large ETH transfers exceeding $1 million increased significantly, and institutional wallet addresses showed a marked growth in ETH balances, indicating planned large-scale accumulation by institutions.

Thus, if a rationale for Ethereum's recent surge is needed, it could be attributed to a rediscovery of its value after excessive FUD, with institutions seizing the opportunity to invest.
