Have to or have gat to are more common in speech to talk about obligation than must, particularly when we talk about obligations which are externally imposed.
🔘You have (got) to be 18 to vote.
Must is more often seen in written English, however.
🔘 Applicants must be over 18 years of age. (= from an application form)
The negative of must for this kind of obligation is must not and the past is had to.
🔘 Applicants must not be over 35 years of age.
😊When I was young, you had to be 21 before you could go in nightclubs.
Must is often used for advice or recommendation because it expresses the speaker's sense that this is necessary or important. Have to is less common in this context.
😊It's an absolutely brilliant film. You must go to see it.
Must also expresses logical deduction.
😊That must be Isabel's sister, she looks so like her!
The negative of must here is can’t and the past is must have.
😊 That can’t be your mother, she looks far too young.
😊 Laura must have gone home. she’s not here.
