How to build a 'perfect' language
(MENAFN - The Conversation) It's well known that JRR Tolkien wrote the Lord of the Rings cycle to create people tospeak the languages he had invented . But, in the television age, artificially created or invented languages – we call them ' conlangs ' – have been gaining increasing attention with the popularity of television series such as Star Trek and Game of Thrones, and films such as Avatar.
Fantasy and science fiction are the ideal vehicles for conlangs. Marc Okrand, an American linguist whose core research area is Native American languages, invented Klingon for Star Trek, while Paul Frommer of the University of Southern California created the Na'vi language for Avatar.
The fantasy series Game of Thrones involved several languages, including Dothraki and Valyrian, which were created by David J Peterson, a 'conlanger' who has invented languages for several other shows. Most recently, fantasy thriller The City and The City featured the language Illitan, created byAlison Long of Keele Universityin the UK.
I teach how to construct languages and one question my students usually ask is: 'How do I make a perfect language?' I need to warn that it's impossible to make a language 'perfect' – or even 'complete'. Rather, an invented language is more likely to be appropriate for the context – convincing and developed just enough to work in the desired environment. But here are a few things to bear in mind.
Who will speak this language and why?
It is very important to be clear about the aims of the language and its (fictional or real) speakers. When conlangs are created for a specific fictional character, the aims and speakers are determined by the story, the author or producer.
In some cases, fragments or descriptions of the language do exist. This was the case for Illitan, which was described as having 'jarring' sounds in the novel The City and The City and there were a few Dothraki expressions in the first Game of Thrones novel. But what if there are no instructions? Ina survey I rana few years ago, many language creators pointed out that a sense of aesthetics and beauty guided them, along with the need to make the conlangs sound natural and a very pragmatic sense of how easily the languages could be pronounced.
There is also a strong link between language and culture, where some languages attract a large fan base because of the culture and community this language represents.A good example is Na'vi , which attracts many learners because of its welcoming community of speakers. In some cases the language itself has developed a strong culture and community, as is the case for Esperanto, whichaims to bring people togetherregardless of their background and supports a strong sense of solidarity.

Introductory Arabic Courses Offered On Campus in Fall, Spring
Following significant controversy last spring, Oberlin will once again offer introductory Arabic courses on campus this academic year. In April, a group of faculty petitioned the College Faculty Council with a proposal to offer a section each of Arabic 101 and 102. Visiting Assistant Professor of Arabic Mahmoud Meslat was hired over the summer to teach the introductory courses.
“As is our process, a group of faculty submitted a request for a temporary line in Arabic to the [Educational Plans and Policies Committee] and the [College Faculty Council],” acting Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences David Kamitsuka wrote in an email to the Review. “The CFC authorized two courses, one in the fall and one in the spring.”
The request followed news last spring that Oberlin would transition intermediate and upper-level Arabic courses to a digital classroom platform called the Shared Language Program, a partnership among several institutions in the Great Lakes Colleges Association. For some, the transition stoked fears that on-campus Arabic offerings would be eliminated, particularly after it was announced that former Visiting Assistant Professor of Arabic Basem Al-Raba’a would not return.
Meslat, Al-Raba’a’s replacement, has taught at Oberlin twice before, from 2011–2013 and 2014–2016. He was an integral part of building up Oberlin’s Arabic program to include celebrations of the Arabic language like Arabic Day, cultural activities, parties, and field trips.
“Students emailed me and wanted me to come back, and I also heard from [Associate Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences Elizabeth Hamilton that] they wanted me to come back,” Meslat said.
Initially, the plan was for Meslat’s introductory courses to complement higher-level courses offered digitally through the SLP. Over the summer, the College successfully participated in some workshops with the technology. However, logistical challenges with a faculty member at Denison University led to Oberlin pulling out of the program for this fall. College senior Simon Idelson was among those planning on taking advanced Arabic courses through the SLP before learning that these courses would no longer be offered.
“The instructor was unfortunately unable to teach the fall SLP courses in Arabic, so they had to be cancelled,” Hamilton said in an email to the Review. “Half-course private readings were arranged to accommodate the students who were enrolled in the distance learning courses.”
Despite the setback, Kamitsuka clarified that Oberlin plans to participate in the SLP in the future.
“The Shared Language Program is an exciting opportunity for all language and culture faculty from across the Great Lakes Colleges Association to collaborate for the purpose of offering as many learning opportunities as possible for students,” he wrote.
The decision to continue introductory Arabic courses on campus follows significant student activism around the issue last spring. The student campaign, known as “Save Arabic,” launched a petition calling for a sustainable funding model for an Arabic program that garnered over 1,500 signatures, coordinated in part by College senior Caitlin Kelley.

Королевство Бахрейн – государство в Персидском заливе, расположенное на островах. Политическое устройство страны – конституционная монархия. Страна характеризуется высоким уровнем жизни населения. Культура Бахрейна тесно связана с исламскими традициями и религиозными нормами.
Однако здесь традиционные исламские правила не так строги, как в других странах шариата. Бахрейн называют самой либеральной и открытой страной арабского мира. В магазинах Бахрейна продается спиртное, и употреблять его не возбраняется. Хорошо развита индустрия развлечений. Большинство женщин носит традиционную просторную одежду черного цвета – абаю, полностью закрывающую все тело с головы до кончиков пальцев. Фактура ткани, крой, наличие вышивки и количество украшений традиционного наряда могут многое рассказать о статусе ее владелицы. Непременным атрибутом является платок. Существует определенная мода на завязывание хиджаба. Оставлять ли открытым лицо или закрывать его – зависит от религиозности женщины и ее семьи. Большинство молодых девушек и женщин наносят яркий макияж. В моде нанесение на тело узоров при помощи хны. Ношение современной одежды не запрещено, хотя откровенные и вызывающие наряды не приветствуются.
Семья – главная жизненная ценность для любого бахрейнца.
Женщина в Бахрейне является хранительницей домашнего очага и традиционно занимается ведением домашнего хозяйства, воспитанием детей. Женщины выходят замуж рано. Браки разрешены с 14 лет. Будущий муж за невесту должен заплатить выкуп. Подготовка к свадебной церемонии может длиться несколько месяцев или несколько лет. Многоженство разрешено в стране, однако супруг должен обеспечить всех своих жен отдельным жильем. Гарем – дорогое удовольствие и многие молодые современные жители страны выбирают моногамию. У шиитов распространены временные браки, по окончании которых женщина получает от мужа ценные подарки или денежное вознаграждение. Дети, рожденные во временном браке, считаются законными. После окончания временного брака, выдержав определенный срок, женщина может опять выйти замуж.
В 2001 году в государстве основан Верховный совет по делам женщин, который следит за соблюдением прав женщин на рынке труда и образования. За последние 40 лет доля работающих женщин выросла до 30%. Хотя есть традиционные мужские профессии, к которым женщины не допускаются. Средняя продолжительность жизни женщин Бахрейна составляет 77 лет. Стремление к знаниям и получению образования среди женской части населения поощряется. Высшее образование имеют 60% представительниц прекрасного пола, многие имеют степень магистра в различных областях. Растет число женщин занятых в бизнесе.
В целом жизнь женщин Бахрейна нетороплива и размеренна: выполнение бытовых работ, походы в магазины и на рынок, воспитание детей. Материальным обеспечением семьи, как правило, занимается муж. Высокий достаток позволяет многим семьям приглашать помощницу по хозяйству, которая выполняет самую тяжелую работу по дому. Молодые женщины могут иметь свое хобби и заниматься спортом. Спортзалы в стране раздельные для мужчин и женщин.
Местные женщины защищены более, чем это принято думать о восточных женщинах. Они могут получить поддержку и консультацию, и в случае надобности обратиться за помощью к судебной системе.

Оно расположено на берегу Арабского залива и незаслуженно ассоциируется в основном с живописными пляжами и прозрачной водой. При этом мало кто знает, что и любителям активного отдыха там есть чем заняться и на что посмотреть. Пустыня, мангровые леса, старинные форты, современное искусство — вместе с Национальным Советом по туризму Катара мы составили список мест, которые позволят взглянуть на страну по-новому.
Песчаные дюны и скульптура Ричарда Серры
Дюны в Катаре достигают 50 метров — они одни из самых высоких на Ближнем Востоке. Тут можно взять напрокат внедорожник, сэндборд или багги — легкий автомобиль для езды по бездорожью — и проехаться по пустыне. Еще есть менее скоростные развлечения: прогулка на верблюдах или ночевка в кемпинге (звездное небо в пустыне — обязательный пункт программы).
Еще одна причина отправиться в пустыню: инсталляция американского скульптора Ричарда Серры «Запад — Восток/Восток — Запад». Она представляет собой четыре 15-метровые металлические пластины, которые с течением времени меняют цвет — от серого к оранжевому, затем к коричневому. «В конце концов они станут как темный янтарь», — говорит Серра. Скульптура находится недалеко от Дохи, но на ее посещение лучше выделить отдельный день.
«Внутреннее море» Хор-аль-Адаид
Хор-аль-Адаид — это природный заповедник, расположенный в катарских дюнах. Он представляет собой соленое озеро, образованное водами Арабского залива, которые проникают в пустыню. Заповедник признан объектом наследия ЮНЕСКО. На его территории обитают аравийские газели и скопы — хищные птицы-рыболовы. Поездку в Хор-аль-Адаид стоит совместить с экскурсией в пустыню — добраться можно только по песчаным дюнам.
Любители велоспорта приезжают сюда в конце зимы на Adaid Desert Challenge — гонку на выносливость. Участники преодолевают 40 километров по песчаным дюнам и финишируют в заповеднике.
Старинный форт Аль-Зубара
Аль-Зубара — военная крепость, построенная в 1938 году на северо-западном побережье Катара. Со временем форт отреставрировали и превратили в музей, который теперь признан объектом всемирного наследия ЮНЕСКО. Крепость расположена на территории в 60 гектаров — сейчас там ведутся археологические раскопки. Когда-то это место было центром торговли и жемчужного промысла, а сейчас — один из наиболее хорошо сохранившихся образцов торгового города XVIII—XIX веков.
Если вы интересуетесь историей, посетите еще один форт — Аль-Ваджба, который был построен в конце XVIII — начале XIX века. В 1893 году там произошло важнейшее сражение — Катар отразил нападение войск Османской империи. Кроме того, в разные периоды он служил резиденцией катарских шейхов. Форт находится в получасе езды от Дохи и открыт для туристов.

Конноспортивный центр Аль-Шакаб и верблюжьи бега в Аль-Шахании
В конном центре Аль-Шакаб учат верховой езде, занимаются разведением и показом породистых арабских лошадей. Туристы могут прийти сюда на экскурсию и посетить конюшни, арены, селекционные комнаты, а также бассейн и даже тренажерный зал для лошадей.
Кстати, в Катаре популярны не только скачки, но и верблюжьи бега, их проводят с октября по апрель — в 20 километрах от Дохи (для этого даже построили отдельный трек в Аль-Шахании, где и проходят соревнования). Интересно, что верблюдами с недавнего времени управляют дистанционно — при помощи роботов-жокеев.

Еще одна причина отправиться в пустыню: инсталляция американского скульптора Ричарда Серры «Запад — Восток/Восток — Запад». Она представляет собой четыре 15-метровые металлические пластины, которые с течением времени меняют цвет — от серого к оранжевому, затем к коричневому. «В конце концов они станут как темный янтарь», — говорит Серра. Скульптура находится недалеко от Дохи, но на ее посещение лучше выделить отдельный день.
«Внутреннее море» Хор-аль-Адаид
Хор-аль-Адаид — это природный заповедник, расположенный в катарских дюнах. Он представляет собой соленое озеро, образованное водами Арабского залива, которые проникают в пустыню. Заповедник признан объектом наследия ЮНЕСКО. На его территории обитают аравийские газели и скопы — хищные птицы-рыболовы. Поездку в Хор-аль-Адаид стоит совместить с экскурсией в пустыню — добраться можно только по песчаным дюнам.
Любители велоспорта приезжают сюда в конце зимы на Adaid Desert Challenge — гонку на выносливость. Участники преодолевают 40 километров по песчаным дюнам и финишируют в заповеднике.
Старинный форт Аль-Зубара
Аль-Зубара — военная крепость, построенная в 1938 году на северо-западном побережье Катара. Со временем форт отреставрировали и превратили в музей, который теперь признан объектом всемирного наследия ЮНЕСКО. Крепость расположена на территории в 60 гектаров — сейчас там ведутся археологические раскопки. Когда-то это место было центром торговли и жемчужного промысла, а сейчас — один из наиболее хорошо сохранившихся образцов торгового города XVIII—XIX веков.
Если вы интересуетесь историей, посетите еще один форт — Аль-Ваджба, который был построен в конце XVIII — начале XIX века. В 1893 году там произошло важнейшее сражение — Катар отразил нападение войск Османской империи. Кроме того, в разные периоды он служил резиденцией катарских шейхов. Форт находится в получасе езды от Дохи и открыт для туристов.

В конном центре Аль-Шакаб учат верховой езде, занимаются разведением и показом породистых арабских лошадей. Туристы могут прийти сюда на экскурсию и посетить конюшни, арены, селекционные комнаты, а также бассейн и даже тренажерный зал для лошадей.
Кстати, в Катаре популярны не только скачки, но и верблюжьи бега, их проводят с октября по апрель — в 20 километрах от Дохи (для этого даже построили отдельный трек в Аль-Шахании, где и проходят соревнования). Интересно, что верблюдами с недавнего времени управляют дистанционно — при помощи роботов-жокеев.

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia -- The 2nd Saudi Falcons and Hunting Exhibition to be held in Riyadh from October 11 to 15 will have 30 sections and more than 350 exhibitors from around the world.
Announcing the details of this year’s exhibition, the Saudi Falcons Club said in a press release that the expo area has been expanded to 36,000 square meters.
This year the exhibition will include sections for exhibitors and falcon breeders, areas for weapons sale, a cultural theater where poetry evenings, seminars, and workshops will be held, as well as a section dedicated to plastic art and visual performances, and various events suitable for the whole family.
The exhibition, which is part of the one-month Riyadh Season, will be open from noon to midnight every day along Airport Road near the Riyadh Business Front.
The first Saudi Falcons and Hunting Exhibition in 2018 was a huge success. It attracted many visitors as well as falconry and hunting enthusiasts from the Kingdom and abroad.

На протяжении последних пяти лет лет все больше и больше голосов ученых озвучивало предположение о том, что Великая пирамида в Гизе скрывает обширную сеть туннелей и комнат, которые, однако, не были обнаружены археологами. Более того, в 2016 году было заявлено, что есть свидетельства наличия пустых пространств, расположенных в северной части этой пирамиды. Более того, в северо-восточной части этой гигантского архитектурного сооружения существует неизученная еще впадина, которая полностью отделены от основных коридоров, проходов и комнат внутри пирамиды.
Пирамида Хеопса входит в комплекс пирамид в Гизе и является одним из "Семи чудес света". Более того, это единственное из чудес, сохранившихся до наших дней.
Великая пирамида Гизы, построенная более 4500 лет назад для фараона Хуфу (Хеопса), имеет высоту 146 метров и являлось самым большим строением Египта того времени. Со всей определенностью можно говорить и том, что это было и самым большим сооружением в на протяжении огромного промежутка человеческой истории.
Научный проект под названием «Scanning the Pyramids» (Сканирование пирамид), в котором участвуют исследователи из нескольких университетов и технических компаний со всего мира, стремится исследовать пирамиду, чтобы увидеть, что внутри нее, используя не инвазивные методы исследования.
Это сканирование привлекает методы использования инфракрасной термографии, трехмерного моделирования и мюонной радиографии для выявления возможных отклонений в целостности структуры пирамиды и присутствия в ней незаполненных полостей и пустот. В то время как метод инфракрасной термографии используется для определения колебаний температуры в структуре пирамиды, мюонная радиография пронизывает структуру пирамиды полностью, подобно рентгеновским лучам. Dubai: For the first time since the Apple’s App Store launched in 2008, Arabic speakers will finally be able to find out for themselves if “there is an app for that”.
The arrival of Arabic on the App Store, which comes as part of the new iOS 13 mobile operating system, had been widely speculated on since July, thanks to its inclusion in a beta version of the new software. Arabic’s addition is part of the company’s aim to make its services as local as possible, according to Oliver Schusser, Apple’s vice-president of Apple Music & International Content. Apple says it wants a completely localised experience for users, including having local languages, local currencies, and local payment methods.
“We know there is a very large proportion of our customers in the Middle East who have their OS set to Arabic — versus English — as a standard language, and one of the things we’ve been working really hard on, specifically in the Arab world, is the introduction of the Arabic language in services with the launch of iOS13,” Schusser said.
Arabic isn’t new to the iPhone. It has been included in Apple’s mobile operating system since 2015. Siri can also speak Arabic. But users searching the App Store, a core feature in today’s smartphones, in Arabic would get different or erroneous results that someone searching in English.
“The App Store will be completely localised in Arabic, and we’re hugely proud of that,” he said.
The addition of Arabic includes more than just descriptions and user interfaces of the apps. In-app events and support will also be in Arabic. More daily content in Arabic is expected to create opportunities for developers in the region and around and the world.

Legendary Arab poet Al Mutanabbi focus of seminar at Manarat Al Saadiyat
ABU DHABI, 22nd September, 2019 (WAM) -- To commemorate the anniversary of the death of renowned poet Abu at-Tayyib Al Mutanabbi, in 965 CE, the Department of Culture and Tourism - Abu Dhabi’s, DCT Abu Dhabi, Poetry Encyclopedia initiative is organising a seminar dedicated to the author’s life and work, on 23rd September, at Manarat Al Saadiyat.
Known to the world simply as Al Mutanabbi, his poems covers such philosophical topics as courage, wisdom, resentment and greed. His poems are a valuable record of his life and times, covering the intellectual issues, revolutions and turbulence of the time, said a DCT Abu Dhabi press release on Sunday.
The event will give visitors the chance to enjoy the legacy of the celebrated Arab poet, and explore his poems and literary life, as well as his role in enriching the Arabic poetry canon.
Born in Kufa, Iraq in 915 CE, Al Mutanabbi began writing poetry when he was just nine years old. With a vivid and robust imagination, and a gift for eloquence of expression, his words were an instrument used to express the author’s many aspirations and emotions.
The seminar will see the participation of prominent figures such as Emirati writer Jamal Matar, author of a book about Al Mutanabbi; Jordanian academic Dr. Mufleh Hweitat, a faculty member of the University of Jordan and author of Poetry of Conflict, a book examining Al Mutanabbi’s oeuvre; and Dr. Hana Sobhi, a faculty member at the Sorbonne Abu Dhabi.
Poet Jarir Al Kaabi and Dr. Ali bin Tamim, Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Arabic Language Authority, will recite a selection Mutanabbi’s poems accompanied by music and song, in a special session that will be opened to the public.
"Abu at-Tayyib Al Mutanabbi is one of the most renowned figures in the history of Arab culture," said Abdulla Majed Al Ali, Acting Executive Director, National Library Sector at DCT Abu Dhabi. "His poetry is honest and romantic, and still resonates deeply all these centuries later; it remains an inspiration for many novelists and poets to this day. This seminar will highlight the impact of his legacy and the important role that poetic verse plays in the literary arena, and will be a fascinating experience for both poetry lovers and those not so familiar with the art form."

Movie nights and coffee hour part of the Arabic club at Georgia Southern
Joining the organization also gives students the opportunity to broaden their knowledge about the Arabic language and culture.
STATESBORO —The Arabic club is an organization on the Georgia Southern campus that seeks to promote the Arab language and culture throughout GS and the surrounding community.
“The Arabic Club is open to all GSU students,” Arabic club advisor Youssef Salhi said. “It’s not just for students studying Arabic, but also for those on campus who are interested in the language and cultures.”
Students who join the club are exposed to to events and activities that promote diversity and cultural exchange.Joining the organization also gives students the opportunity to broaden their knowledge about the Arabic language and culture.
Every Monday at 5 p.m. the organization hosts an Arabic Coffee Hour in the Interdisciplinary Academic building to discuss different topics related to the Arab world. Along with monthly meetings and Arabic Coffee Hour every Monday, the club also hosts movie nights, an Arabic cooking workshop, belly dancing workshops and more.
The Arabic club recently traveled to Atlanta to take part in the 13 annual Atlanta Arab Festival.
Taking place at the Alif Institute, the festival celebrated Arab culture with exhibitions on food, coffee and language. Six students from the GS Arabic language program attended the event, along with an Arabic language teaching assistant.
The club went in support of the annual event, and to also strengthen ties with the Alif Institute in hopes of collaborating on future projects.
The festival is becoming an Atlanta tradition, as it was attended by 5,000 people last year, according to the Alif Institute’s Facebook page.
Festival attendees enjoyed live music and performances, along with fun activities, rides and more.
“We learned about several different organizations working with different parts of the Arab-American community in Georgia,” Arabic club president Nathan Carpenter said.
