It was a damp squib of an affair as both Lion City Sailors and BG Tampines Rovers failed to deliver a match worthy of a Cup Final.

The overcautious approach by two of the biggest clubs in local football resulted in an ordeal that the fans simply had to endure.

I still cannot believe this was the kind of football we saw at JBS earlier.

Everything was in place for the match everyone had been looking forward to, yet the quality shown was poor.

The lack of dynamism in the final third at both ends made it a pain to watch. Dragging the match into extra time felt unnecessary; it could have been avoided if both the Sailors and the Stags had been more aggressive in attack.

ICYMI - LCS WON CUP 3-0 AFTER STAGS BREACHED RULE

BG Tampines Rovers breached article 19.2 by "failing to maintain a minimum of four Singaporean players on the pitch at all times" during last Saturday's (10/1) Singapore Cup Final match against Lion City Sailors at Jalan Besar Stadium.

As such, the outcome was "ultimately declared lost by forfeit by BG Tampines Rovers by the score of 3-0 instead".

In 2006, a simple taxi ride to Choa Chu Kang Stadium revealed a harsh truth about Singapore football that still resonates 20 years later.

I struck up a conversation with the driver (which I documented in a blog post that year), a former fan who used to bring his son to games. What followed was a wake-up call.

Despite his past interest, he had no idea where teams were playing, who was coaching them, or even how much a ticket cost.

KEY LESSONS FROM THE BACKSEAT:

▶️ THE "PUNTER" PERCEPTION: The driver felt that legalised betting had diluted the passion of the stands, replacing "real fans" with "punters"—a sentiment that impacted his desire to return.

▶️ THE AWARENESS GAP: If a former fan doesn't know where a cornerstone team like the Young Lions plays, we have a marketing and outreach problem.

▶️ THE FADING CONNECTION: The "Kallang Roar" generation didn't necessarily transition into lifelong domestic league supporters.

BG Tampines Rovers showed their structural build up from their back to the front with those well-curated balls into the box for Hide Higashikawa. Sadly, the same thing can't be said on Tanjong Pagar United in this Singapore Premier League fixture at Our Tampines Hub.

If Jags can play the kind of intensity in the second half like they did against the Stags earlier on a consistent basis, it shouldn't be that far away from making it back to be among the local elites like they were in the 1990s, right?

Having lopsided scorelines frequently in the league is not a good sign at all. Enough of those usual bullocks given out as excuses.

When the league isn't competitive enough, we shall not expect it to fulfill its role to gear the Lions for better things.

Is it an excuse when two of your best defenders are not available and resulted in this avalanche before the break? Saw how Lion City Sailors Football Club converted their chances with ease is never a good sign at all.

The quotes flanking the main picture of this 1992 The New Paper report were likely the first reactions from both Lim Tong Hai and Steven Tan after they earned their first Lions call-up under the then Singapore national coach, Milouš Kvaček.

The late Coach Kvaček arrived in Singapore with a huge reputation, and many expected him to take the Lions to the next level.

Alas, things never went according to plan, as the Czech tactician quit the job before the start of that year’s Liga Semi-Pro season.

𝐂𝐎𝐑𝐑𝐄𝐂𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍: I have been informed that Lim Tong Hai actually received his first Lions call-up back in 1988, not 1992. I sincerely apologise for the blunder and would like to thank the person who pointed out the mistake who I consider a true authority in statistical compilation.
