#bftp9am - A RARE 1913 LOCAL FOOTBALL MEDALLION

In this collage is the front and reverse of a rare medallion of the "Singapore Football Association" (one of the former names of the Football Association of Singapore— FAS).

This silver medallion was manufactured by "Vaughton & Sons" of Birmingham, England, and assayed in 1913, based on the distinctive hallmark known as "Birmingham Dates".

According to available sources, the 1913 hallmark comprises an anchor, a silhouette of a lion, and the character "O" (this hallmark was also used for the year 1938).

Since the Singapore Football Association was renamed as the "Singapore Amateur Football Association" on 14th May 1929, it is therefore confirmed the medallion was a product assayed in 1913.

When success stories like Cape Verde and Iceland emerged in recent years, many are quick to point out that these two nations have smaller populations than Singapore, asking: "If they can do it, why can't we?"

However, I think many overlook the fact that stuff like dual nationality and a highly robust football structure are what enabled them to achieve what we couldn't.

Let's not forget that a number of Cape Verdean players were actually born outside the country and developed their footballing foundations in European academies — a crucial factor that completely sets them apart from our local setup.

AFF CHAMPIONSHIP MUST RECALIBRATE!

The AFF Championship has definitely lost its gloss as the region's premier marquee tournament.

Unlike in the early days, the build-up to this supposedly flagship competition has failed to reach a fever pitch.

Is it due to fan fatigue after 39 days of intense World Cup action, or the awkward timing to stage a regional tournament during a "pre-season" period?

Seeing players recalled by their clubs midway during the last tournament was comical. Yet, these clubs were within their rights to do so, given that the competition fell outside the official FIFA calendar.

With the new FIFA ASEAN Cup coming into the picture soon, the role of the AFF Championship urgently needs a recalibration if it wishes to stay relevant.

The organisers must look in the mirror and reflect as these structural shortcomings become increasingly obvious.

It would be a great shame to see a tournament with such rich history gradually fade into obscurity.
