Here are the facts, COVID in the first 10 days of April .

*In the first 10 days of April 2021, a total of 20,666 confirmed cases have been identified. Comparison of the number of confirmed cases in the first 10 days of last month (10,806) shows a marked (91%) increase.

*A total of 14, 468 cases have been admitted to both treatment centers and HBIC with a daily average of 1447. This is also a marked increase compared to 6,099 daily admission (average 610) in the first 10 days of March.

*Daily facility death has remarkably increased in early April. A total of 275 deaths were observed in the first 10 days of April (i.e. 28 deaths daily on average). This figure was just 101(i.e. 10 deaths daily on average) in the first 10 days of March.

*The number of critical cases being supported by a mechanical ventilator have continued to increase in April to a record level. This is likely straining the national capacity of ICUs. Some regions are running out of ICU beds

*The number of healthcare workers infection and admission to HBIC has increased in April.
Cumulatively, 2,859 HCW infections, 27 deaths (CFR of 0.9%) and recovery rate of 90% have been reported so far since the start of the pandemic.

We are excited to share the details of an impactful one-day advocacy program on the "Roles and Contribution of Respiratory Therapy in Ethiopia." This program, organized in collaboration with SPHMMC (Saint Paul's Hospital Millennium Medical College), the Clinton Health Access Initiative, and the Ethiopian Society of Emergency Professionals (ESEP), was held at the prestigious Elily International Hotel.

The advocacy program brought together distinguished guests from various esteemed institutions, including the Federal Ministry of Health (FMOH), SPHMMC, Addis Ababa University, Jepiego, the World Health Organization (WHO), the Clinton Health Access Initiative (CHAI), the Ethiopian Society of Emergency Professionals (ESEP), the Ethiopian Thoracic Society (ETS), and the Texas Respiratory Care Foundation.

The primary focus of the program was to highlight the indelible roles and contributions of Respiratory Therapists (RTs) in providing quality healthcare services in Ethiopia. RTs play a vital role in managing respiratory conditions, ensuring patient care, and promoting overall well-being. This event aimed to raise awareness about the importance of their profession and shed light on their significant contributions to the healthcare system.

During the program, insightful discussions took place on the future directions of the respiratory therapy career path in Ethiopia. The participants explored opportunities for professional growth, skill enhancement, and the expansion of the scope of practice for RTs. By recognizing the potential of this profession, we can pave the way for its further development and ensure that RTs continue to provide exceptional care to patients across the country.

The collaboration between SPHMMC, the Clinton Health Access Initiative, and ESEP in organizing this advocacy program is a representation of their commitment to enhancing the quality of healthcare services in Ethiopia. SPHMMC, in particular, is dedicated to improving healthcare standards and has initiated significant programs that contribute to the overall development of the sector.
