โ Yes / โNo questions
Yes / No questions are those questions that expect โyesโ or โnoโ as answer. These questions do not take the question words when, what, where etc.
Yes / No questions are used to check information or ask for confirmation.
โAre you coming with us?โ โYes.โ
โHas he returned the car?โ โNo, he hasnโt.โ
โDo you live in Chicago?โ โNo, I donโt.โ
โDoes she speak English?โ โYes, she does.โ
โDid you meet John yesterday?โ โNo, I didnโt.โ
Note the use of auxiliary verbs in the above examples.
When we answer Yes / No questions we do not normally repeat the complete the question. Instead, we use an appropriate auxiliary verb. This auxiliary is usually present in the question.
โDoes Mike live with you?โ โYes, he does.โ
โDid Maya tell you she wasnโt coming?โ โNo, she didnโt.โ
In negative answers we use the auxiliary verb and not. Usually a contracted form is used.
โHave you ever visited Argentina?โ โYes, I have.โ
โWill you help me?โ โNo, I wonโt.โ (wonโt = will not)
Here is an overview of Yes / No questions in different tenses.
