Model Writing Task 2 Answer

Question
"Some people believe that professional athletes are paid too much money compared to other important professions. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?"

Model Answer (Band Score 9)
There is ongoing debate about whether professional athletes are overpaid compared to other essential professions like doctors, teachers, and engineers. While some people believe that sportspeople earn excessive amounts of money, I disagree with this statement to a certain extent and believe that their high salaries are justifiable for several reasons.

Firstly, professional athletes are at the pinnacle of a highly competitive and lucrative industry. The sports industry generates billions of dollars globally through ticket sales, broadcasting rights, merchandise, and sponsorships. Athletes are the main attraction that drives these revenues, and their salaries reflect the financial value they bring to teams, leagues, and advertisers. This principle is similar to other entertainment sectors, where artists and performers earn based on their ability to attract large audiences.

Secondly, the careers of professional athletes are often short-lived, typically lasting about ten years due to the physical demands and risk of injury. Unlike other professions that offer long-term stability and growth, athletes have a limited window to capitalize on their skills. Moreover, reaching the top level in sports requires years of rigorous training, discipline, and sacrifice. The compensation they receive can be seen as a reward for their dedication and the risks associated with their profession.

However, it is essential to recognize the argument that other crucial professionals, such as doctors and teachers, provide vital services to society and are often underpaid compared to athletes. While this is a valid concern, it highlights broader issues of how societies value different roles rather than a specific criticism of athletes' salaries.

In conclusion, while the salaries of professional athletes may seem excessive compared to other essential professions, they are largely justified by the economic impact they have and the unique demands of their careers. To address disparities, societies should focus on better compensating those in vital roles rather than limiting the earnings of athletes.
