Can AI help us detect boats from space? Yes, it can!
One of the applications that runs onboard the soon-to-be launched #Phisat2 makes use of machine learning techniques, in particular deep learning, to autonomously detect and classify vessels based on the images acquired through the Ξ¦sat-2 multispectral camera.

How can we compress satellite images onboard so we can reduce the amount of data that is sent to the ground without losing relevant information?
Artificial Intelligence! π€
One of the applications uploaded onboard the #Phisat2 mission will test how deep image compression performs in space:

We have already sent AI to space... now we are doing it again!
The #Phisat2 mission, which is launching soon, involves an Earth observation 6U CubeSat platform capable of running AI apps that can be developed, easily installed, validated and operated on the spacecraft during their flight using a simple user interface.
The payload will include the AI processor Intel Movidius Myriad 2, which was already adopted on the Ξ¦-sat-1 mission.
