Today is International Day of Forests! π³
Forests are the backbone of global food security and nutrition, sustaining millions of people by providing essential foods that are critical for Indigenous and rural communities. Forests strengthen agriculture networks by hosting pollinators, enriching soil, regulating climate, and conserving biodiversity. They also provide energy for activities like cooking and supply freshwater to over 85% of the worldβs major cities. Quite simply, healthy forests mean thriving food systems.
Yet, these irreplaceable ecosystems are under threat. Every year, 10 million hectares of forest are lost to deforestation, while wildfires affect approximately 70 million hectares. Protecting and restoring primary forests is not just an environmental necessity - itβs essential for securing food systems, livelihoods, and the health of communities across the world.
On this International Day of Forests, we call for urgent action. The future of food begins in the forests. Letβs work together to keep them standing.

π€What is a primary forest?
IUCN defines primary forests as naturally regenerated forests of native tree species, whose structure and dynamics are dominated by ecological and evolutionary processes, and where if there has been significant prior human intervention, it was long enough ago to have enabled an ecologically mature forest ecosystem to be naturally re-established.
