🌿 One Health is an integrated, transdisciplinary approach to health that recognizes the interdependence of human health, animal health, and environmental health. Central to the One Health approach is the idea that people cannot sustainably protect any one domainβ€”humans, animals, or natureβ€”in isolation. Each of these domains influence one another in multiple, often complex ways. Without a healthy environment, ecosystems cannot deliver benefits for animal and human health.

The IUCN Forest and Grasslands Team participated in two events focused on One Health during the #IUCNCongress.

🌲 Last week marked the conclusion of the #IUCNcongress, and one important topic on the agenda was primary forests. Highlighted through events at the IUCN Programme Pavilion, GEF Pavilion, and beyond, the urgent need to conserve and protect these ecosystems was abundantly clear.

Primary forests are some of the most valuable ecosystems on our planet. Unfortunately, they are quickly disappearing. From now until #COP30, which will take place in the heart of the Amazon🌳, we will be exploring why primary forests are so important, and what we can do to ensure their continued survival. Stay tuned for discussion on primary forests and how they intersect with biodiversity πŸ¦‹, climate β›…, health πŸ₯, and people πŸ‘«.

🎬 To kick off our month on primary forests, hear from experts on why primary forests matter and what efforts are being spearheaded by the IUCN, the Global Environment Facility, and our partners to conserve them.

πŸ€”What is a primary forest?

IUCN defines primary forests as naturally regenerated forests of native tree species, whose structure and dynamics are dominated by ecological and evolutionary processes, and where if there has been significant prior human intervention, it was long enough ago to have enabled an ecologically mature forest ecosystem to be naturally re-established.
