MediaAt a place called Taranto on the southern most coast of Italy on the ‘heel’ bit of the country if you are looking at a map. We only had time to see the old town, which was dominated by a 15th Century fort- built for King Ferdinand of Aragon- the father of the first wife of King Henry VIII - my kids were excited to figure out that connection. The weather was that blistering, blinding heat when you only have to look at the sun and you start to sweat. I wore my cotton safari style dress- I felt I wanted to cover up a bit more in that intense sun. This is a dress I bought from Arket a few years ago and I love that it’s a modern classic. After enjoying the welcome sea breeze at the fort, we walked slowly through the small streets of the old town- some quite derelict, but thankfully shady- until we reached the Cathedral…quite plain inside apart from a very opulent ceiling; but if you wander through the Church to a Chapel to the side, you will be treated to the most sumptuous sight- floor to ceiling inlaid marble in dizzying patterns, topped off with a frescoed ceiling which you could look at in more detail through a mirror on the floor! There were flowers on the alter from a recent wedding and I can only imagine how beautiful that would have been in that setting.
