MediaBOOK REVIEW 📚Penance by Eliza ClarkPenance is a novel written from the perspective of Alec Z. Carelli, a former journalist and failed author, writing a book about one of the most tragic crimes committed in a small British town, the murder of a teenager by 3 of her class mates.We are taken through the story by so many different characters which was fascinating, the way the truth shifts and never really settles. I'm glad we weren't trying to solve a whodunnit, it's interesting to focus a bit more on the why and how did it get to that point rather than the murder itself.I must admit I wasn’t a Tumblr teen and never used it so I couldn’t quite connect to that side of the story. What I will say is that I’ve been obsessed with true crime since I was very young so those parts resonated hard. I enjoyed the discussion of how harmful true crime can be as well as the fixation on social media. Clark really delves into the morality of how true crime is treated, discussed and obsessed over by society while also capturing really well the dark side of interactions between teenage girls. This book was gritty and I couldn’t stop reading. I loved the way it was formatted and the complex discussions of what it was to be a teenage girl in the 2000-2010 era. I’ve seen a lot of people discuss the ending but for me I thought it was genius but I can see how it wouldn’t be for everyone.
