In a calm state, the head of the short-eared owl appears completely round. However, if the owl becomes alert, 'ears' made of feathers appear on the top of its head. The owl paid no attention to our presence, and I couldn’t figure out what had disturbed it.
It turned out the short-eared owl had good reason to be wary. Another owl approached it instantly and silently! Unfortunately, the angle wasn’t ideal, so I couldn’t properly capture the skirmish between the two owls. Within a second, the first owl quickly retreated into the thickets, and the second one remained.

More about owls.
The second owl seemed larger and somewhat darker in color. Later, I realized it was a completely different species—it was a long-eared owl! The owl flew from place to place a few times, listened intently, then perched on a hogweed, took off, but its hunt was unsuccessful, and it flew across the river.

Sometimes in the life of a wildlife photographer, a good shot comes unexpectedly when you were planning to shoot something entirely different. I went to photograph beavers in Sviblovo and was lucky enough to see a family with kids. Unfortunately, the lighting and colors left much to be desired, so while I got to observe the beavers, I didn't get a single truly successful shot. And then, suddenly, I noticed a rat washing itself. The resulting photo turned out to be very amusing. I titled it 'Oh, what th f... is happening?!'"
