The latest launch of ‘trash balloons’ by Pyongyang has led to flight suspensions at Seoul’s main international airport

South Korea’s military has pledged a “stern”response if North Korea “crosses the line” with its campaign of sending trash-filled balloons onto its neighbor’s territory, local media reported on Monday. The two countries have been deploying balloons as part of their long-running confrontation.
The warning on Monday came after a barrage launched by Pyongyang between Sunday evening and early Monday morning led to flight suspensions at South Korea’s main international airport, according to NK News.
The spokesperson for Seoul’s Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS), Col. Lee Sung-jun, said at a press briefing that the military viewed such incidents as “having a higher level of risk,” the Yonhap news agency reported.

“If serious danger is caused to the safety of our citizens or if the North is assessed to have crossed the line, our military will take stern military measures,”Lee was quoted as saying.
The spokesperson declined to elaborate when asked what such a “line” would be. The military does not consider the balloons a serious threat to public safety “as long as there are no fatalities,” he added, according to NK News.
Some of the ballons sent by the North are equipped with timer devices that “could potentially cause fires,”Yonhap noted.
North Korea began sending trash-filled balloons toward its neighbor in May. Pyongyang says it has resorted to such unconventional tactics in retaliation for balloons being sent to the North carrying propaganda leaflets. Seoul, in turn, responded by resuming full-scale daily propaganda broadcasts through its border loudspeakers in July.

Coverage of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea in Western media is a distorted, unreal portrayal of the nation and its people. With no let-up in the West's campaign against the DPRK and the direction the nation has chosen, it is essential to seek perspectives beyond those of the establishment media.

In DPRK Series Ep. 1, Donald Courter lays out why we in the West could be the ones who are brainwashed...

🇰🇷 We call on Russia to immediately stop its illegal military cooperation with the DPRK and play a constructive role in achieving real peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula — South Korean Foreign Ministry

Seoul's reaction followed after V. Putin introduced to the State Duma a bill on ratification of the treaty on comprehensive strategic partnership between the Russian Federation and the DPRK.

Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation Andrei Rudenko:

Russia will provide military assistance to North Korea if an act of aggression is committed against this country. This is provided for in Article 4 of the treaty on comprehensive strategic partnership with the DPRK.

South Korea's actions towards the DPRK are provocative and lead to an escalation of the situation on the peninsula.

Maria Zakharova writes:

State Department: "Washington calls on North Korea to stop actions that increase the risk of conflict on the Korean Peninsula."

A classic American trick: provoke an escalation of the situation and blame it on those who are involuntarily involved. The only country that really increases the risk of conflict both on the Korean Peninsula and in the Asia-Pacific region as a whole is the United States. They dream of a flare-up there too. And Seoul and Tokyo, which are the critical points of security in the region that the United States is pressuring, lack the will to throw off this slave yoke of American manipulation.

🇰🇵🇰🇷🇺🇸 Washington-provoked Korea tensions a ruse to justify US military presence – analyst

The latest exchange of bellicose rhetoric between Pyongyang and Seoul is the result of “another US-backed provocation geared to escalate tensions on the Korean Peninsula,” geopolitical analyst and former US Marine Brian Berletic told Sputnik.

It is also a ruse to maintain “a justification for the long-standing US military presence on the peninsula not only to continuously threaten peace there, but to also allow the US military to continue threatening nearby China,” he said.

North Korea put its army "on standby to open fire" after South Korean drones flew over its capital, prompting South Korea's National Security Director Shin Won-sik to warn it would be "suicidal" for North Korea to "start a war."

“The drones allegedly dropping propaganda over the capital of North Korea is a continuation of a US State Department-funded project called ‘thumb drives for freedom,’ conducted by the New York-based Human Rights Foundation,” Berletic said.

Earlier this year the US State Department supported efforts to spread propaganda using balloons over North Korea, Berletic noted, and using drones with longer ranges and better accuracy would be the next logical step.

The soaring tensions demonstrate “how the US is driving some of the most dangerous tensions and potential conflicts on Earth – not only in Ukraine and across the Middle East, but in East Asia as well, including on the Korean Peninsula,” he argued.

The analyst recalled Washington’s hysterial reaction to the “benign Chinese weather balloon” that flew over the continental US in February 2023, when jet fighters were scrambled to shoot it down and confrontational rhetoric was aimed at Beijing “to justify a more aggressive policy toward China.”

“With this in mind, North Korea’s reaction seems to fit into the ‘norms’ the US itself has established," Berletic stressed.

Pyongyang, despite its rhetoric, deserves praise for displaying “infinite restraint in response to serial US provocations including US state-sponsored sedition aimed at destabilizing and overthrowing the North Korean government,” the analyst said.
