P.E.I. immigrant retention improves, but still Canada's worst by far

P.E.I.'s ability to retain immigrants has almost doubled in recent years, according to a recent info from Statistics Canada, but almost three quarters of those arriving are still gone after five years.

The report examines what province or territory the immigrants land in, and whether they are still filing taxes in that province five years later.

It found that in 2015 just 15.6 per cent of the immigrants who arrived on P.E.I. in 2010 were still in the province. By 2020, that five-year retention rate had increased to 28 per cent.

Retention in Newfoundland and Labrador, the province with the next lowest rate, is 47.8 per cent. The rate is in the 40s and 50s across Atlantic Canada. In other parts of Canada it ranges from 62.9 per cent in Saskatchewan to 92 per cent in Ontario.

Newfoundland and Labrador government announces recruitment mission to Ireland to recruit physicians and nurses

The Provincial Government is leading a mission to Ireland to recruit physicians and nurses who can fill vacancies in Newfoundland and Labrador. The mission complements other national and international recruitment activities targeting health care professionals.

Ireland has been chosen as training standards for physicians are similar to Newfoundland and Labrador, and the team will be exploring recruitment opportunities for nurses who meet equivalent licensure requirements. The region was also chosen because it has a high concentration of high-quality medical and nursing schools.

Newfoundland and Labrador opening legislature for emergency ambulance strike debate

The Newfoundland and Labrador government is gathering today for an emergency sitting of the legislature to deal with an ongoing private ambulance strike. The legislature will open at 10 a.m. so members can debate a bill that would make private ambulance services essential.

About 120 workers with seven private ambulance services owned by Fewer’s Ambulance Service walked off the job early Friday afternoon, seeking higher wages and a better pension plan.

The strike affects significant parts of rural Newfoundland, including the towns of Stephenville, Bonavista and Conception Bay South, which is just outside the capital of St. John’s.

Legault to visit Newfoundland and Labrador for talks on Churchill Falls deal

François Legault
will travel to Newfoundland and Labrador on Thursday for two days of talks on a new Churchill Falls hydroelectricity deal.

The 1969 agreement with Newfoundland and Labrador allows Hydro-QuΓ©bec to purchase the majority of the electricity generated at the station in central Labrador β€” and therefore reap most of the profits.

As of 2019, the deal has yielded close to $28 billion in profits to Quebec, compared to just $2 billion for Newfoundland and Labrador.

The Newfoundland and Labrador government established a panel last year to prepare for the negotiations and examine how the province could benefit when the current agreement ends in 2041.

The panel recommends the provincial government to negotiate a new arrangement for sales to Hydro-Quebec.

Legault apologizes to Newfoundlanders for 'bad' Churchill Falls hydro deal

Quebec Premier FranΓ§ois Legault said on Friday that he understands the β€œfrustration and the anger” of Newfoundlanders over the Churchill Falls hydroelectric deal signed with Quebec in 1969.

The Churchill Falls agreement allows Hydro-QuΓ©bec 85 per cent of the power generated by the Labrador dam for a mere two cents per kilowatt hour.

πŸ’΅Legault said Quebec is ready to pay more for power from Churchill Falls β€” and do so before 2041 β€” in exchange for a β€œvery advantageous price” for electricity once the agreement expires in 18 years.

Two days in a row, protesters stood outside the Confederation Building pleading for a stop to rural emergency room closures.

On Tuesday, March 14, people travelled to St. John’s from Whitbourne to voice their concerns. On Wednesday, they came from Bonavista.

Health Minister Tom Osborne said the provincial health authority is now offering another incentive for doctors to practice in some rural, hard-to-staff hospitals: a $200,000 bonus for a two-year return of service agreement.

He said it’s already rolled out for Bonavista, and in the next couple of days it will be offered to any doctor who will practice in New-Wes-Valley, and then offered to doctors who will go to Baie Verte.

$200,000 is stackable on top of the Come Home incentive that offers $100,000 to any Newfoundland and Labrador doctor currently working outside the province to return home to work.
