πŸ“° This Raspberry Pi e-ink display looks like framed wall art, and the software behind it is open source

One of my favorite things about e-Ink displays is that they don't look like displays. Sure, they are screens, and you can put whatever you want on them, but unlike LCDs, you can put an e-Ink display into a picture frame, and it won't look out of place. One excellent example just appeared in the Raspberry Pi community, and while the end product looks amazing, the software running it is an excellent tool for smart home displays.

The UP WCL is a credit card-sized computer from AAEON that’s about the same size and shape as a Raspberry Pi Model B. But this model has an Intel Wildcat Lake processor instead of an Arm chip, support for up to 24GB of onboard LPDDR5 memory and up to 256GB of UFS storage. It doesn’t have built-in .

πŸ“° I tried LibreELEC on a Raspberry Pi, and it's better than any smart TV can ever be

Setting up a new smart TV these days means sitting through a barrage of privacy prompts, account-creation screens, and data-collection agreements. I’ve been guilty of just hitting accept and next to get the TV working. But the problems don’t stop there. Declining too many prompts locks features behind sign-ins. Worse, the telemetry quietly got re-enabled after a firmware update, and manufacturers made opting out just a temporary inconvenience.

πŸ“° This maker built a daily briefing printer with a Raspberry Pi Zero, and the code is open source

Getting your daily briefing printed out on a little piece of paper is so much more satisfying than an email. Maybe it's the fact that the paper is a tangible thing you can hold, or maybe it's just because it looks like you're getting a briefing from some kind of secret agency; either way, it's a lot cooler than receiving your daily digest digitally.

πŸ“° A $15 Raspberry Pi Zero 2W does Pi-hole better than any spare PC you have lying around

Every time I had to reboot my mini PC to update a Docker container, a VM, or just to apply patches, my entire home network went down with it. My family often noticed that before I did. My mini PC wasn’t struggling with the Pi-hole's load, but there was a simpler, yet just as problematic issue.

πŸ“° I turned an old Android phone into a home server, and it outperformed my Raspberry Pi

I have used Raspberry Pi boards for years. They remain one of the easiest ways to get started with self-hosting, home automation, and small server projects. My experience with Raspberry Pi boards has generally been positive, but they come with a few limitations. Performance can become a bottleneck once you start running multiple services. Storage performance also depends heavily on the medium you use. MicroSD cards remain among the weakest...

πŸ“° The Raspberry Pi price hikes pushed me to ESP32s, and honestly my smart home runs better now

Holding off on that Raspberry Pi 5 purchase since last year was a mistake. Raspberry Pi has raised prices three separate times since December 2025. With the price revision in April, some models were selling for 83% above their launch price. The 16GB Pi 5, which was selling for $120, is now $205 after the price hike. The company, like many others, pointed to the DRAM shortage as the cause of global price increases across several products.

πŸ“° PiZZa turns your spare Raspberry Pi Zero W and 2 W into an Arduino

If you're a tinkerer, there's a very good chance you have a spare Raspberry Pi board or two sitting around. If one of them happens to be either a Raspberry Pi Zero W or a Zero 2 W, and all it's doing is collecting dust right now, why not turn it into an Arduino? It may sound impossible, but one project, called PiZZa, aims to let you do just that.

Back in March, we covered an open-source camera called the Saturnix. Back then, it was a work-in-progress, but it was still cool enough to check out. The creator said they'd get something out as soon as they could, but much like everything else in life, it took more time than expected.
