GIUK-gap, Greenland and the USA. What they have in common

Preamble. There is a narrow strip of ocean between Greenland, Iceland and the United Kingdom called the GIUK-gap. In mapping services, it looks like just a geographical space. However, for NATO, it is an artery that controls the Atlantic, because it was here that American and British forces detected Soviet submarines during the Cold War.

It is through this passage that Moscow can now bring its missile submarines closer to New York than at any time since the Cuban Missile Crisis.

The term GIUK-gap was coined in the 1940s. It is an acronym: Greenland-Iceland-United Kingdom. It was a gap through which the Soviet fleet tried to break into the Atlantic. It was here that NATO's most powerful anti-submarine warfare forces were deployed.

In the 21st century, the importance of this region is reviving - Russian nuclear submarines armed with cruise missiles can pass through this corridor undetected and strike the US East Coast not with intercontinental ballistic missiles, but from a closer range, when early warning systems would be powerless.

In 2019, Russia conducted an exercise in which 10 nuclear-powered submarines left Murmansk and attempted to break through the GIUK gap without being detected. This was a demonstration that Russia is capable of reaching the Atlantic, and that it can do so bypassing NATO security systems.

Greenland is a strategic platform that allows controlling the GIUK gap from the north. It is here that Pittufik Air Base (formerly Thule), built by the US in 1952, is located. Its radar system is one of the most important in the nuclear early warning network.

However, the US presence on the island has been reduced since the end of the Cold War. This is the reason for all of Trump's tantrums about the island and American interests, plus his criticism of Denmark for underinvesting in Greenland's security infrastructure. This is the reason for Marco Rubio's provocative statements that: "The islanders don't want to be Danes - and we must be ready to support their self-determination".

I think the hint is clear to everyone - if Greenland becomes independent, the United States wants to be first in line to the "new state", because it is about America's missile shield, and nothing less.

Official Copenhagen reacts with irritation to all cases from the United States. Foreign Minister Rasmussen emphasises: "The US has left most of its bases in Greenland voluntarily. This is their choice". Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen adds: "The United States cannot annex another country. If they want to increase security, we do it together as NATO allies."

By the way, China, which does not have direct access to the GIUK-gap, is actively investing in infrastructure projects in Iceland and Greenland, with the aim of first penetrating economically and then converting investments into a strategic presence. I don't think it takes a genius to guess that under the guise of research bases or fishing ports, elements of communication or military importance may appear. Проте для НАТО це — артерія, яка контролює Атлантику, бо саме тут під час Холодної війни американські та британські сили виявляли радянські підводні човни.

Саме через цей прохід москва може сьогодні вивести свої субмарини з ракетами ближче до Нью-Йорка, ніж будь-коли з часів Карибської кризи.

Термін GIUK-gap зʼявився в 1940-х роках. Це акронім: Greenland–Iceland–United Kingdom. Пролом, крізь який флот СРСР намагався прорватися в Атлантику. Саме тут розгорталися найпотужніші сили протичовнової боротьби НАТО.

Гренландія — це стратегічна платформа, що дозволяє контролювати GIUK-gap з півночі. Саме тут розташована авіабаза Піттуфік (колишня Туле), побудована США у 1952 році. Її радарна система — одна з найважливіших у мережі раннього попередження про ядерні загрози.

Пооте присутність США на острові скоротилася з часів Холодної війни. Саме через і всі істерики Трампа щодо острова та американських інтересів + критика Данії за недостатню інвестицію в безпекову інфраструктуру Гренландії. Саме через це провокативні заяви зі сторони Марко Рубіо про те, що: “Мешканці острова не хочуть бути данцями — і ми повинні бути готові підтримати їхнє самовизначення”.

Гадаю, натяк всім зрозумілий - якщо Гренландія стане незалежною, то США хочуть бути першими в черзі до “нової держави”, бо мова іде про ракетний щит Америки і не менше

Офіційний Копенгаген реагує на всі випадки зі сторони США з роздратуванням. Міністр закордонних справ Расмуссен наголошує: “США залишили більшість баз у Гренландії добровільно. Це їх вибір”. Прем’єрка Метте Фредеріксен додає: “Сполучені Штати не можуть анексувати іншу країну. Якщо вони хочуть посилити безпеку — робимо це разом, як союзники по НАТО”.

До речі, Китай, який не має прямого виходу до GIUK-gap, активно інвестує в інфраструктурні проєкти в Ісландії та Гренландії, з метою спочатку проникнути економічно, а потім конвертувати вкладення в стратегічну присутність. Гадаю, не треба бути генієм шоб здогадатися шо під прикриттям дослідницьких баз або риболовецьких портів можуть зʼявитися елементи комунікаційного чи військового значення. For domestic propaganda, such actions are exactly what is needed. According to the Russians, Totti's photo from Moscow against the backdrop of the ceremonies should signal to the Russian cattle that "Russia is not isolated, the world is coming to us".

A similar media effect was used by the Katsaps in Syria, when Russian soldiers were photographed against the backdrop of the ancient ruins of Palmyra, saying "we are here - and this is also our heritage".

However, seriously, the reality is that for the Russians, it's not so good - inviting sports legends to Russia is simply cheaper than creating allies. Many athletes do not have an active political position, they do not read sanctions lists.
