Russia is "peacefully" hybridising its attacks on Ireland.

The Journal, an Irish online publication and one of the most prominent digital media outlets in Ireland, wrote this about the attack on the submarine cables:

The incident took place in waters off the northeast coast earlier this year - today the vessel reappeared off the Irish coast.

A cargo ship linked to Russia's shadowy fleet was spotted by an Irish Air Force aircraft and anchored next to a submarine cable in Irish waters.

It turned out that the incident took place earlier this year in the waters off the northeast coast. The Air Corps sent an aircraft to monitor its movements, as the vessel is on the list of vessels linked to Russia.

The air force was able to film the vessel anchoring in the area and after a message from the Irish crew, the cargo ship fled. It has not been confirmed whether the ship deliberately targeted the underwater infrastructure or whether it was a case of poor seamanship.

A Caribbean-flagged vessel got into trouble in the Baltic Sea the same month. The German authorities withdrew it from the area along with its Swedish and Danish naval colleagues.

This time it was travelling from St Petersburg through the waters off Gotland, an island off the coast of Sweden. It was spotted in Irish waters earlier this year and was monitored after intelligence from a friendly country was shared with the Irish state.

An Irish Air Force maritime patrol vessel was sent to monitor the ship and captured it with special video equipment when it dropped anchor. The Irish Defence Forces contacted the ship by radio and ordered it to pick up the anchor, after which it left the area.

The newspaper learned that the ship has returned to Irish waters and is heading for the west coast. The vessel left the Bay of Biscay and is currently off the coast of Cork and Kerry.

Using the open flight monitoring service, The Journal managed to track RAF CASA 295, which this afternoon headed to the ship's location.

Earlier, this publication has already reported that Ireland has conducted a large-scale closed-door exercise to test how Ireland would cope with a complete loss of internet connectivity following a targeted attack.

It is understood that the event, known as a command and control exercise, took place in February and involved numerous government departments and agencies, including the Defence Forces, the Garda Síochána and other emergency services.

The exercise scenario involved a coordinated cyber-attack, which was combined with the disruption of several submarine cables.

A large number of fibre-optic internet cables run through Irish waters, connecting Europe with the US and other parts of the world. They carry all high-speed Internet traffic, including banking and other important data."

Russian disinformation network in Austria: the new reality of hybrid warfare

In December 2024, the Austrian State Security and Intelligence Service (DSN) conducted a search of the home of a Bulgarian citizen. What seemed to be a routine espionage case turned into the exposure of a large-scale disinformation network coordinated from Moscow - the Bulgarian citizen is suspected of close contacts with Russian special services, in particular through intermediaries in the UK and Russia.

According to Austrian investigators, the suspect is linked to an organisation acting on behalf of Jan Marsalek, a former Wirecard executive long suspected of having links to the FSB. Marsalek disappeared in 2020 after one of the largest financial scandals in Germany and, according to EU intelligence services, is an agent of Russian intelligence.

In addition, two women and one man from Bulgaria were recently convicted in London for their involvement in the same spy network linked to Marsalek. European investigators say they have evidence pointing to an extensive structure operating in at least three countries: Austria, the UK and Russia.

The goals of the Russian disinformation network in Austria are the same as elsewhere: to sow distrust in Ukraine and its government, in particular President Zelenskyy; to promote pro-Russian narratives in the German-speaking world; to push public opinion to indifference or scepticism about military assistance to Kyiv; to undermine trust in state institutions; and to provoke a split in Austrian society.

The most insidious element of the above-mentioned information campaign is the imitation of support for Ukraine with radical slogans that cause rejection. In exchange for rubles, stickers and graffiti with nationalist and right-wing radical symbols were distributed in Austria, which were supposed to create the perception among the local population that support for Ukraine = support for extremism.

In fact, this is nothing more than a classic identity fraud tactic - a method in which an agent or organised group poses as part of a particular community - activists, journalists, volunteers, minorities, LGBT+, environmentalists, or even "patriotic" Europeans - but with one goal: to compromise that group from within.

In addition, the campaign included online fakes, manipulative publications, and even actions near symbolic sites such as Jewish or Soviet memorials. This, according to the Russian special services, was to reinforce and create the impression that Ukraine is an allegedly "uncivilised" country, "anti-Semitic", etc.
