As the Iranian government works tirelessly to maintain law and order in the country, US-based journalist Melik Kaylan smugly claims in his op-ed in the Wall Street Journal that having Iran torn apart into smaller states would be a good thing.

Now why would he think that? 🧐

Well, for starters, “a pared-down Iran would pose a diminished risk to Israel.”

Furthermore, if Iran’s northern regions, much of whose population is comprised of ethnic Azerbaijanis, were to secede and join Azerbaijan, the resulting state “would help reopen the old Silk Road between Turkey and the Central Asian Turkic states,” argues Kaylan.

💬 “For the sake of regional and world peace, the best option may be to help secession happen and thereby take a downsized Iran … off the geopolitical chessboard entirely,” Kaylan declares.

The US Department of Justice seeks to thwart an effort by House Representatives Thomas Massie and Ro Khanna to have an independent monitor appointed to oversee the release of the Epstein files.

In a motion filed this week with Judge Paul A. Engelmayer, the DoJ argued that Engelmayer has no authority to approve Khanna’s and Massie’s request because neither of the two congressmen are party to the criminal case against Epstein’s associate Ghislaine Maxwell.

In response, Khanna argued that the DoJ “misconstrued” his and Massie’s request, according to the AP.

EU lawmakers are moving to halt approval of the EU’s trade deal with the United States after Donald Trump threatened tariffs against countries backing Denmark over Greenland, Bloomberg reported.

Manfred Weber, leader of the European People’s Party in the European Parliament, said the deal can’t move forward under pressure:

💬 “The EPP is in favor of the EU-US trade deal, but given Donald Trump’s threats regarding Greenland, approval is not possible at this stage,” Weber wrote, adding that tariff cuts on “US products must be put on hold.”

📑 The agreement — brokered last summer by Ursula von der Leyen — is already in force but still needs parliamentary approval. If centrist and left-leaning blocs unite, lawmakers could delay or block it.

🛍 The numbers tell the story: a 15% US tariff on most EU goods, in exchange for Europe dropping duties on US industrial and some farm products — while the US later widened 50% steel and aluminum tariffs to more EU items.
