Last night, Apple briefly removed Telegram from the App Store because a single user had planted illegal pornographic content in a public group chat.
โฌ
๏ธ Telegram was restored within hours. But I want to explain what happened โ to warn other app developers and help protect online communities from similar attacks.
๐งนBecause Telegram quickly removes illegal content from public groups using all kinds of moderation tools, the attacker had to resort to a technical trick. He inserted AI-modified illegal content by editing an old message in an active group chat. As a result, the content was effectively hidden from the groupโs members, preventing them from seeing and promptly reporting it.
๐ฐ The attacker was a takedown extortionist: someone who demands ransom from group owners in exchange for not targeting their communities. These extortionists use automated accounts to plant illegal content in public groups and then report it directly to Apple, attempting to trigger the removal of legitimate communities whose owners refused to pay them.
๐ค From a practical standpoint, illegal pornographic content in Telegramโs public groups is not a systemic problem. Our moderation is efefctive. The fact that attackers must resort to backdated, effectively invisible content and other technical tricks proves this.
โ ๏ธ However, there are two important lessons here for app developers and online communities:
โ Extortionists have found a way to manipulate Apple into overreacting. Apple removed Telegram from the App Store before contacting us. This creates a potential systemic risk for every mobile app that hosts user-generated content. If an app used by more than a billion people can be removed from the App Store without prior warning, any app can be.
โ The tactics used by takedown extortionists are evolving, putting communities across social platforms at risk. Telegram has extensive experience identifying the tricks used by coordinated reporting gangs and protecting legitimate communities (even when doing so risks our own app being temporarily removed from the App Store). Other platforms may not be equally prepared.

Just days after President Trump fired FBI Director James Comey, Acting FBI Director Andy McCabe opened a full investigation into the President.
That investigation was titled 'Oxferd Comma,' the misspelling perhaps intentional so as to avoid FOIA searches should the name ever leak. This investigation sought to develop evidence that Trump was colluding with, who else, Russia and Vladimir Putin and also examine whether Trump or anyone associated with him had interfered in Crossfire Hurricane or any other RussiaGate investigation.
The very next day, it was taken away from him when Deputy AG Rod Rosenstein appointed Robert Mueller as Special Counsel and moved ALL Russia-related investigations to him.
Weโve long known these events took place; a redacted copy of the opening memo was released years ago, but we now know the name of the investigation and have memos with fewer redactions.

Iโd had the eclipse in my phone calendar since Februaryโnot because I needed reminding, but because putting things in calendars was what you did when you were an editor, and old habits died harder than curses.
Callum found the reminder that morning and studied the screen over my shoulder.
โTae the minute,โ he said.
โ6:47 p.m. Eighty-seven percent coverage, specifically for Loch Arkaig.โ
โIn mโtime, ye kent it was coming from records. From men whoโd watched the sky their whole lives.โ He handed the phone back and glanced at the ordinary August morning beyond the window. โBut nae like this. The whole world mapped, for every place at once.โ
โThatโs about right.โ
โAnd people drive hundreds of miles tae watch it.โ
โThey do.โ
He considered that.
โAye,โ he said. โRight enough.โ
* * *
I noticed when the daylight through the War Room windows went wrong.
Not darkโdimmed. The sky remained blue, but less so, as though someone had turned a dial above the atmosphere.
โItโs starting,โ I said.
The meeting stopped.
โThe eclipse. Come on.โ
We went outside.
Loch Arkaig had become a painting of itself. Strange golden light grazed the hills at an angle August had never produced, beneath a blue too deep for that hour. The moon had taken a slow, deliberate bite from the sun, leaving it a brilliant crescent.
Callum looked up and forgot to speak.
โOch,โ he said at last.
One quiet word, and everything behind it revising itself.
โTold you.โ
The loch held the altered sky. Shadows stretched in directions they had no business going. One bird fell silent, then another, until the entire hillside stilledโnot before weather, but before something older and more precise.
Ancient. Mechanical. Beautiful.
Sorcha stood apart from us, her face lifted. Something had genuinely surprised herโnot enough to crack the composure, only enough to command her full attention.
โYon Bonnie Tyler lass,โ she said to nobody in particular. โHad it right enough.โ
Frog swallowed a laugh.
Callum looked at me.
I gave him nothing.
This was not the moment to explain Bonnie Tyler.

The chapter becomes considerably less peaceful after thisโbut that part can remain behind the Veil for now.

I don't even know if "beta reader" is the right term for what I'm looking for. I really just need one or two additional sets of human eyes who genuinely enjoy my work and wouldn't mind reading it rough โ sometimes *very* rough โ and pointing out mistakes as I go.
I'm not looking for someone to rewrite it, and I'm definitely not asking anyone to do professional editing work for free. I need the person who enjoys getting chapters early and doesn't mind saying, "Hey dumbass, you used the same word four times in this paragraph," or "Wait, this doesn't make sense," or "Didn't Callum already know this?" ๐
Ideally, I'd love someone who enjoys Scottish history/Highlands, time travel, fae/fantasy, etc., since that's obviously the world I've decided to live in.
The biggest thing is that you'd need to be okay seeing the sausage being made. These wouldn't necessarily be polished chapters. You'd be seeing things before everybody else, mistakes and all.
I unfortunately can't afford to pay anyone right now, which is why I've hesitated to even ask. But I also know I've reached the point where I really need at least one other human brain looking at this stuff besides mine.
