The Head of the Main Personnel Directorate Colonel General Viktor Goremykin has replaced Colonel General Zhidko as the head of the Main Military-Political Directorate. My understanding is that Zhidko is commanding Russian forces in Ukraine and the VVO.

Zhidko left his position at the Main Military-Political Directorate weeks or months ago, so this does not mean he isn't the commander of Russian forces in Ukraine. Deputy Defense Ministers are not supposed to command troops, and he only gave up command of the VVO in November.
