Some Sunday thoughts on America and the defense of Norway and Europe.

Some input values: I have been an Atlanticist, believed in America as a beacon and the leader of the free world and strong proponent of as close as possible bilateral defense relationship.

With the current administration and where we are, the analyst in me (I'm an unaffiliated private citizen btw) says this:

We cannot trust the Trump admin in a crisis involving Russia. We need a Plan B.

Still, we must work with the Americans, when we can, as long as we can.

We also still need the US defense industry for a rapid military buildup.

This means our government needs to do a difficult balancing act, but when necessary we must stand our ground, despite risking fallout, such as on Ukraine.

Because of this balancing act, we are unlikely to see the Norwegian government, and other engagers such as the UK talk about a Plan B in public until the bridges are finally burnt.

Because of the consequences, they can't do it. Such discussions will be highly classified.

Opposition parties may have a bit more freedom of maneuver, but they must also be careful.

Analysts, scholars and journalists have full freedom of maneuver, but the debates will be hampered because officials can't fully engage until everything comes crashing down.

I think this is worth having in mind going forward.

European countries have a lot of work cut out, on the war and on increasing our own defense capabilities, but they cannot speak frankly in public about everything.

The approach will of course vary from country to country.

As with everything concerning the Trump admin, I might draw flak over this.

To round off:

In my hobby room, among other crests and memorabilia, I still have an American flag. I don't plan on taking it down.

RT @AlexLuck9: Good points IMO. "European countries have a lot of work cut out." in particular.

We are in the current predicament over a consistent lack of interest by decisionmakers engaging with the matter at hand, kicking cans down the road on serious defence efforts.

@PaulSmyth2015: The balancing act involves swallowing pride, attempting to work with Trump, to try and maintain the links to the US as best as possible.

As for the refueling case, that was an act by a private citizen and company owner, who in a free and democratic country can say and do what he wants, not in any way reflective of official Norwegian government policy.

@GuySpeaks4Real @APHClarkson: Trump and all other US administrations have been correct in saying that Europe has neglected defence since the end of the Cold War, I agree, and repeatedly write about this.

It was possible to work with Trump 1 and Nor - US bilateral defense ties was strengthened.

Trump 2 is something completely different though, and the world is different now as well.

We are in the most critical security situation since WW2, and the way the current administration is acting, especially in regards to Russia, represents far too great a risk to us.

@PaulSmyth2015: The Norwegian PM and government speaks about the importance of maintaining the links, and working with the US all the time.

Here is our PM in London today, as an example. He says we need to have the US involved to reach a durable peace for Ukraine.
