@OccTranspo: Conceptually, I think very little has changed since WW2, so looking at history is still very valuable.
Especially so when looking at a type of operation which, with the exception of Inchon and the Falklands, hasn't been conducted since then.

RT @heatloss1986: During the development of the Tomahawk Cruise missile, an airfield attack version was proposed.
This was to utilize runway-cratering submunitions as an alternative to manned missions or nuclear strikes to disable a Soviet airfield in a war.
This was MRASM BKEP, or AGM-109H.

@OccTranspo: Reaction times are shorter now but that's about it, thinking conceptually, and not diving into specific systems. Over the horizon targeting still remains a challenge which is why you shouldn't be fixated on range rings.
Naval equipment isn't marginalized. Why do you think the Chinese are conducting one of the larger naval buildups in history?

@KEdvardson: I don't think that much has changed conceptually since then, except that reaction times are shorter now.
The Japanese could escort land based bombers beyond 500 nautical miles, and back, in 1942. To me, conceptually, their role was the same as the long range missiles of today.
As back then, air superiority and good enough sea control remains the keys for a successful amphibious operation.
