RT @NavalInstitute: #OTD in 1940, Congress passed the Vinson-Walsh "Two-Ocean Navy" Act which increased the size of the U.S. Navy by 70%. It was the largest naval procurement bill in U.S. history, adding 18 carriers, 7 battleships, 33 cruisers, 115 destroyers, 43 subs and 15k aircraft to the fleet.

RT @HthHans: #OTD 10 August 1809 a Danish-Norwegian gun boat flotilla under Captain Søren Bille reconquered HMS Allart under Commander James Tillard. The Danish-built Allart had been taken by the British after the siege of Copenhagen 1807. Finally, it became part of the Norwegian Navy in 1816

RT @NavalInstitute: #OTD in 1944, USS Barb was making an approach on a Japanese ship when it encountered a new "anti-submarine weapon": a bird that had perched on the attack periscope, blocking the view of the target. The CO switched to his navigation periscope to fire torpedoes and sink the ship.

RT @NavalInstitute: #OTD 1942, Nobuo Fujita became the only enemy pilot to bomb the contiguous U.S. when he dropped incendiaries near Brookings, Oregon after being launched from sub I-25 in a Yokosuka "Glen". After the war, he presented Brookings with his 400-year-old katana to express his regret.
