RT @JamieMctrusty: 8th May 1942: Battle of the Coral Sea. A frantic day of activity by the American and Japanese carrier fleet resulted in losses to both sides. USS Lexington was sunk, while USS Yorktown was damaged. IJN Shōkaku was severely damaged and, crucially, the invasion force bound for Port Moresby turned back.

(L) USS Lexington burning after being abandoned, with the loss of over 200 crew. A bomb hit had ruptured an aviation fuel tank, releasing vapour which later ignited and caused a chain of explosions. Despite this, it took 5 torpedoes from the destroyer USS Phelps to sink her. Although Yorktown suffered significant damage, she was patched up in just 48 hours once she reached Pearl Harbor.
