RT @USAmbKyiv: Russia’s attacks on civilian and port infrastructure in Odesa, Izmail, and Reni devastate places where people live and work. As Russia continues to weaponize food, these escalatory attacks also represent a total assault on Ukraine’s ability to get badly needed grain to people… https://t.co/KEKEIeYBhX

@shashj I think armor is one component. Russian anti-tank capabilities are quite strong, so Ukraine has to neutralize them with other arms. That has been difficult so far because of a lack of air superiority and other capabilities.
Rob Lee (Twitter)

@historicfirearm The problem is that Russia has advantages in an attritional fight because it has more manpower and ammunition.

I think this discussion need some nuance to "trained by the West"

For newer formations, we are talking about wartime raised, mostly mobilized units, given 4-6 weeks of combined arms training.

This should have contributed to managing expectations in advance

@historicfirearm Exactly. Before the offensive I thought that Russia's defenses were the critical variable. If Russian units didn't run and its commanders used their capabilities in a competent manner, it was going to be very tough for Ukraine even if execution was perfect.

These units where then given the task of trying to break through fortified lines, in depth, constructed over time.

Again, prehaps contrary to the expectations of many, the Russians are fighting tenaciously and according to doctrine.

No easy task for any army.

To put some perspective on training timeline, the Norwegian Army says 6 months to get a battalion ready for brigade level operations from the day a new conscript intake starts basic training.

This is with the normal, peacetime complement of officers, NCOs and other enlisted

For a wartime raised unit in Ukraine, most officers and NCOs are mobilized as well, attrition has taken it's toll on the pre-war professionals and the timeline is rushed.

Expectations should have reflected this.

As others have said, the goal of Western training programs must be to enhance, improve and support the Ukrainian way of war, especially from the battalion level and up

Trying to form the AFU into a US (NATO) mold in wartime won't work. Humility on both sides will be required
