Also among the casualties after the sinking of the Montevideo Maru were 25 Norwegian merchant mariners from the M/S Herstein

Chief Steward Carl Thorsell was killed in the air raid.

Norway wasn't officially at war with Japan, so the crew of the Herstein, with one exception, the Captain, decided to wait for the Japanese landing to get out of Rabaul with their help.

They ended up as prisoners.

Captain Godtfred Martin Gundersen didn't trust the Japanese and wanted to avoid interrogation, so he decided to get away on his own.

This resulted in a 350 mile, 78 day journey through the jungle of New Britain before being picked up, along with some Australians.
