Western leaders should benchmark victory but stating the objective as suggested in this article would unfortunately likely be a gamble.

Western equipment deliveries are too small in quantities, important capabilities are withheld and industrial output lags behind demand.

Ukraine’s expected offensives face a multitude of challenges, not all attributed to Russia, but Russian forces and defensive lines shouldn't be underestimated.

This is why I repeatedly call for managing expectations and pulling all the stops on Western support for Ukraine.

Addendum:
A long war must still be the guiding strategic planning assumption, both in Ukraine and in the West.

I do understand how easy it is to succumb to other, more comfortable ideas, but doing so is dangerous.

@RWerpachowski This is why stating that we stand behind Ukraine for the long run is important, such as the Norwegian 5-year program that has broad political support, so future elections won't change anything.

And of course, there are plenty of actors in the Western political sphere that don't see going beyond 2021 borders as desirable.
