Thoughts on a Sunday:

From my perspective it's too soon to draw conclusions whether Bakhmut was handled right or not.

I am still concerned over a possible negative impact on future Ukrainian operations, with Avdiivka factoring into this equation too.

The Ukrainian handling of this battle has a rationale that I can understand. That's not the issue. There is no risk free approach here.

An important point: My concerns is about the battle after about mid February, before that it was likely playing out to Ukraine’s advantage

The big questions, maybe only answerable in hindsight:

Was the cost of holding on to Bakhmut (and continue doing so), in lives, equipment and ammunition (esp artillery) worth it?

What is favorable attrition?

How important is it to deny Russia a "victory" at Bakhmut?

Russian units involved there has been mainly various Wagner elements and the 106th Airborne. Few other Russian regular units have been involved.

I do question the impact grinding these down will have on overall Russian defensive capabilities later this spring and summer.
