Kick-starting important upcoming Norwegian defence debates, VG reports that one proposal that will later be finalized as part CHODs recommendation, suggests a new surface structure for the RNoN at 6 new frigates and 24 smaller ships.

Chief RNoN confirms that the recommendation will be to go for new frigates by joining an already existing program of one of our closest allies.

VG reports that both the US and the UK are positive towards Norway buying into already running construction programs.

On smaller ships, the idea is reportedly to go for cheaper, simpler designs in order to have more hulls available for coastal operations than in the current fleet.

Since details are still scarce, as this isn't the final proposal and Navy surface ships is just one part of the big picture, I won't jump onto this yet, except to say:

Yes, Norway needs a bigger Navy and we must not forget coastal operations.

Any such plans of course rests on political will to pay up.

At times I want to give up on the domestic defense debate, due to lack of political will to face reality

In Bakhmut, Vuhledar, and other key battles right now, Russia is firing several times more rounds per day. Without that advantage, Russia's offensive potential would be significantly degraded. Investments in production capacity now could be critical for Ukraine in 2024-2025.
