RT @KofmanMichael: Rob and I were in Bakhmut last week and the situation looked difficult. From artillery ammo shortages, increasingly contested lines of communication, and an attritional battle in unfavorable terrain - this fight doesn’t play to Ukraine’s advantages as a force. More to follow.

I'm looking forward to hear more analysis following your trip to Ukraine
I've touched upon this before, that the goal of Russian operations over this winter may have been to avert, or restrict, a future Ukrainian offensive by forcing the commitment of reserves and supplies early
-----------
@KofmanMichael:
I think the tenacious defense of Bakhmut achieved a great deal, expending RU manpower and ammunition. But strategies can reach points of diminishing returns, and given UA is trying to husband resources for an offensive, it could impede the success of a more important operation.

If the Russians can achieve this, the high casualties they have suffered may then be seen as acceptable from a Russian perspective.

A more more on this, and other factors, in my last Substack article, already a few weeks old.
Back then I didn't have too much hard data to go by, but had a feeling that especially the defense of Bakhmut was drawing in reserves and supplies.

My conclusion on Feb 18th:
"What are the Russians actually capable of and can Ukraine conduct serious spring/summer offensive later on?
At the current time I find it difficult to draw hard conclusions on these questions and my current mood is leaning towards wait and see."
