I share @shashj misgivings about this article. Framing a future battle for Kherson as "shape the fate of Ukraine" isn't helpful. I also think it's wrong to say so.

Kherson is one sector of a long frontline, and the Dnipro plays a significant role, constraining both sides.

I get nervous seeing this. Framing Kherson as a singular, decisive battle could go horribly wrong for Ukraine. "The looming Battle of Kherson is an event of unprecedented international importance. The outcome of this battle will shape the fate of Ukraine" https://t.co/SlI0XrhyFY

Among many factors, attrition is among those that matters the most.

If Russia chooses to feed reinforcements into an area with very fragile supply lines, Ukraine can inflict serious damage without without being overly focused on terrain.

Though unlikely, Russia can choose to withdraw to good defensive positions east of the Dnipro to ease the supply situation.

There are also rumors that Russia is planning an offensive of their own, despite the strained logistical situation.

There are many factors shaping how the war develops, and currently both sides seems unable to produce, and exploit, a major breakthrough in any sector.

I don't think we will see a "decisive battle" anytime soon. This war is a succession of marathons, not a sprint.
