Gripen has no advantage in operating from austere runways, and we're not going to be basing the F-35 in the far north either.

Your premise is frankly moronic. Nobody is buying an American aircraft because they think they might need to fight the United States. They are buying it because you want your pilots to have the biggest possible advantage over possible adversaries, such as Russia & China.
