@TBNRApollo @Maks_NAFO_FELLA: Radars limit them; these AMRAAMs are primarily used for NASAMS systems. Ukrainian F-16s are equipped with such AMRAAMs, but they mainly use shorter-range Sidewinder Missiles to shoot down drones and missiles.
With such radars, Ukrainian F-16s shooting down Russian fighter jets is impossible with radars with a realistic range of around 50km or a max range of 80km.
If Ukraine’s F-16s were upgraded or received F-16s with AN/APG-68, Ukraine would be able to shoot down fighter jets over +110km away, with a maximum range of 150km. That’s over 2 times the distance that they currently can see.
Russian fighter jets launch glide bombs 50km from the frontline, and Ukrainian fighter jets launch glide bombs 20 km from the frontline. Currently, the distance between Russian and Ukrainian fighter jets is 50km to 80km, not enough for Ukrainians to effectively engage Russian fighter jets without putting their aircraft and lives at risk.
If they had radars with a maximum range of 140km, 160km, or 200km, they could shoot down Russian fighter jets from over 100km away.
