Trump is considering sending one additional Patriot system to Ukraine, while Norway and Germany plan to buy 3 Patriots, which may take months or years to deliver to Ukraine
Ukraine is not in the best situation right now with air defenses because Russia rapidly scaled up its production of Shaheds with the help of China and has changed its tactics with Iskanders. Ukraine has a missile shortage for Patriots and not enough air defenses to intercept the number of Shaheds and cruise missiles that Russia could launch.
At the very minimum, Ukraine needs 6 to 8 new Patriot batteries as soon as possible, most of which must be equipped with dozens of PAC-3 MSE missiles, several launchers, and powerful radars.
Ukraine needs air defense stronghold cities, meaning several cities that are so well defended by air defenses that the vast majority of missiles and drones will be intercepted. These cities need to be Kyiv, Dnipro, Kremenchuk, Odesa, and at least one other important city, requiring at least two Patriots per city.
Ukraine’s Patriots need to be upgraded with the best radars, and PAC-3 MSE must be better adapted to intercept Iskander-Ms; otherwise, these Patriots will be useless against Russian ballistic missiles not just for Ukraine but for NATO countries as a whole. Each of these stronghold air defense cities needs to have NASAMS and/or IRIS-T systems, other systems to intercept cruise missiles, and EW and Vampire systems to intercept hundreds of Shaheds.
Ukraine needs either Tomahawk missiles from the US or to work on a long-range cruise or ballistic missile with Europe that could be mass-produced and be able to reach at least 1,400km to take out Russian Shahed and Iskander-M factories. Ukraine will be in a very bad situation, much worse than it is now, if this or most of this is not done as soon as possible.
