From CSAF Allvin's speech yesterday: Since 1990, the Air Force has 60% fewer fighter squadrons, 40% fewer personnel, but only 15% fewer CONUS bases. That's a lot of real estate that isn't being used for much.

I largely agree with what @Inkvisiit writes here.
Yes it is bleak, but that is what the outlook has been for a long time now. That why security guarantees are so crucial when it comes to securing a viable future for Ukraine.
A gew points, based on comments:
Europe has yet to turn talk into actions.
Trump may save, or at least reduce pressure on the Russian economy. (The oil price is a joker though.)
There was a collective failure to recognize that the war changed character when the Russians mobilized and started digging in late 2022.
The sins of the past, both in Ukraine and in Europe / the West, are back to haunt us with a vengeance.
