Russia had 9 months to fortify defenses on Ukraine's most likely axis of advance (much of the front has been fortified for years). Ukraine is seeking to retake its territory, which means Russia can achieve a high force-density ratio by leaving its border less well-defended. 2/

Ukraine has limited maneuver options and fewer maneuver capabilities than NATO militaries, and it is relying on new brigades for this offensive, which only had limited time to train on new equipment and as a unit. Will Western militaries face such a situation? Not sure. 3/

In Kharkiv, Ru forces were degraded and did not prepare serious defenses. This was largely a manpower and complacency issue. Now we are seeing Ru defend in a competent manner in line with Ru doctrine and with greater manpower. The context matters to the offense-defense debate. 4/
