Alexander Kharchenko says that Wagner sustained many times more casualties when fighting in fields (i.e. the flanks) than inside of Bakhmut. He said this was primarily due to a lack of armored vehicles.

This is interesting, I've been wondering why they don't cover the trenches. It seems like they are adapting now.

One of the biggest reasons for this would not be to catch the grenade, it would be to conceal the guys in the trench. It would also make the side holes in to the trench wall a bit safer.

@ObserverTx That is an extra step for them before they can effectivly target the guys in the trench. It's a few extra flights. Which risks the drone.

I think the Wagner model of using a large number of convicts mixed with professional fighters works best in dense urban terrain. It isn't as effective in open fields where commercial UAVs + artillery and machine guns are extremely lethal to unsupported infantry assaults. 2/

This is why fighting in the city was less favorable for Ukraine than outside of the city. It's also most likely why RuAF stopped the attempt to encircle Bakhmut and used disposable troops inside the city instead.

@VictorishB123 @GwarWorin That’s more Jake Sullivan. Antony Blinken is the Secretary of State so he doesn’t express his own policies publicly. He can’t go against the President publicly. The President makes the policies that Blinken expresses. Saying things privately is different then saying them publicly

@MatBabiak Well that refers to properly equipped troops with armored vehicles etc. Not dudes in Adidas running over fields. (ok not exactly but almost). You also need to consider RuAF enveloped Bakhmut, removing several important elements like counter battery for Ukraine.

@MatBabiak Plus, Russia did not care about those losses. So it it only really cost them some ammo.

Another explanation is that the Russian MoD has moved units to the area to replace Wagner forces, and to defend the city and its flanks from a Ukrainian counterattack.
-----------
@RALee85:
I think this is what's happening, as does Rybar and Murz. Russia has moved a large amount of artillery and other reserves to the Bakhmut area, but it doesn't appear Ukraine has committed any of its new brigades to the area.
