He also apparently drove a colonel serving under him to commit suicide after a heated reprimand. Surovikin commanded Russian forces in Syria twice and Assad reportedly requested to extend his time in Syria because of his success.14/

Surovikin was the first ground forces officer to be put in charge of the Russian Aerospace Forces. Indeed, it is somewhat surprising that he wasn't placed in a more operational role in this war sooner. He clearly isn't being blamed for the Russian Air Force's issues. 15/

The CO of the VDV Colonel-General Andrey Serdyukov was replaced by Colonel-General Mikhail Teplinsky who was serving as Chief of Staff of the Central Military District. Teplinsky received the Hero of Russia award for his actions in the 1st Chechen War. 16/

It is not clear where Serdyukov, who commanded Russian forces in Syria and CSTO forces in Kazakhstan, was moved. It appears the VDV was given command of seizing Kyiv, and he was possibly replaced when that failed. Not clear if Teplinsky will have an operational role. 17/
