@APHClarkson: That might be the European strategic objective but to be blunt we bet on hope getting us there. Hope that the Russians would get tired and decide to give up, and this is far from any real strategy.

There was also a failure to recognize that the war changed character with the Russian mobilization and them starting construction of their fortified lines.

@ruth_deyermond @John_ForemanCBE: To me it seems like we, the West in general, have pinned everything on the hope that the Russians would get tired and give up.

We failed to recognize their determination to reach their objectives and that the war changed character with the Russian mobilization and the construction of their fortified lines.

@mttjon @APHClarkson: I don't see anyone ready to go to war with Russia over Ukraine. Not in the past, not now and not in the future. This is why I have been sceptical of the security guarantees, coalition of the willing, discussions from the beginning.

The only thing that could change this is IMO is Russian hostile action above the threshold of war against NATO countries but then we are in a completely different ballgame.

@mttjon @APHClarkson: Regardless of circumstances, one cannot deploy forces to Ukraine without being ready and willing to go to war if it comes down to it.

I can imagine scenarios where European deployments to Ukraine don't inevitably results in war but that would require political will and risk appetite far beyond anything we have seen so far. The willingness to fight would then be the deterrent to keep it from snowballing.
