SBU unmasks Russian military intelligence (GRU) spy network in Zaporizhzhia coordinated by priest of the Moscow Patriarchate church

During his sermons, the Moscow Patriarchate priest scouted for pro-Russian locals, justifying Russia’s armed aggression and war crimes. He later recruited promising candidates to work for Russian GRU.

The SBU first uncovered his activities after arresting a Russian artillery spotter in Zaporizhzhia (who has already been convicted). That detainee testified against the cleric, prompting the SBU to begin documenting the priest’s subversive operations.

The priest coordinated his actions with a senior agent of the Russian GRU’s 316th Intelligence Center.

Searches uncovered phones and computers containing incriminating evidence. At the priest’s residence, the SBU also found a Russian passport, Kalashnikov ammunition, and bladed weapons.

The suspects remain in custody. The investigation continues to identify...
