Shetland was the hub of the Shetland Bus operation, bringing refugees out and agents and supplies into occupied Norway, and also the base of a Norwegian MTB Flotilla that operated against the occupied coast from Nov '42 onwards.

The wartime MTB operations are an important part of the heritage of the Norwegian FPB Service, with a history stretching all the way back to 1873, and now that heritage and spirit lives on as the 1st Corvette Sqn, with the Skjold-class.
