Hegseth is a pick that is coming totally out of left field. While he's a combat veteran and Major in the National Guard, he doesn't have any executive experience either in government or the private sector.
The Department of Defense has 3 million employees and takes up approximately half of the US Federal Government's discretionary budget. So needless to say, a high degree of managerial competence is needed to succeed in this position.
