Smoke was something they emphasized in Soviet times and this is why I say surprisingly rare.

@thinkdefence: I think it is mostly driven by FPVs even though Russia has employed smoke frequently as part of training exercises. A little surprising it wasn't employed as widely earlier in the war.

@thinkdefence: Maybe, but FPV usage also increased as the war became more static. I think the greater saturation of FPVs and reconnaissance UAVs is spurring the development.
