More than 200 former political prisoners and their relatives were arrested in Belarus during a mass raid by Lukashenka’s enforcers, @viasna96 reports.

Several dozens of people were sentenced to administrative arrests, several people were detained under criminal cases. They are charged with Art. 361-1 (participation in an extremist formation) and Art. 361-4 (promoting extremist activities).

The KGB’s interest was probably related to the help for the families of political prisoners from the INeedHelpBY initiative, which the authorities recognized as an ‘extremist organization’. The initiative used popular online services to deliver food to the families.

“Ban EHU and promote studies in Russia”: Belarusian authorities have been purposefully limiting access of Belarusians to European education for several years.

@iSANS_CEE analyzed how the Lukashenka regime set a course to limit access of Belarusians to education in the EU and concluded that the campaign of restriction began in summer 2021 – with the closure of the Goethe Institute and the German Academic Exchange Service.

Other steps taken by the regime include:
• Termination of the agreement with Poland on mutual recognition of higher education documents;
• Abolition of deferments from military service for those studying abroad;
• Crackdown and closure of centers for learning the Polish language in Belarus.

Experts note that in 2024, the regime will continue to complicate the life of Belarusians who want to enter foreign universities. “The actions and statements of representatives of the Lukashenka regime are consistent and have the purpose to liquidate two most popular European directions for Belarusian graduates – universities of Poland and EHU,” they believe.

The reason is simple: the desire of the state to limit the access of citizens to the understanding of the mechanisms of democratic and legal society as much as possible. At the same time, the propaganda of admission to universities of Russia and China is growing. This not only increases the dependence of Belarus on these countries, but also clearly confirms that the restriction of access to European education for Belarusians is politically motivated.
