I think the more talk there is in the West about negotiations and divisions over aid and strategy, the more this could make the Russians believe that victory is reachable, leading to them to double down on the war and confrontation with the West.

In Russia, All Policy Roads Lead to the War
Over the past year, the invasion of Ukraine is at the core of Russia’s domestic, economic and foreign policy.

RT @APHClarkson: @Mortis_Banned: This underlines the intellectual bankruptcy of a lot of "unconditional ceasefire" talk that doesn't grapple with how Russia will not stop the war until a strategic equilibrium is reached that forces it to abandon maximalist goals and accept trade-offs in serious negotiations.

Therefore, continued and increased international aid is the only road to equitable peace in Ukraine
Those who advocate to cease aid are either uninformed as to Russia's (officially and repeatedly stated) war/diplomacy aims, or don't really want peace but…

Secondly, European countries that have taken out too large peace dividends (which is nearly everyone) needs to rapidly rebuild their own militaries and conventional capabilities.
This also requires industrial mobilization.

So what can be done?
Firstly, a define clear strategy together with Ukraine on what is an acceptable outcome of the war, with a long war perspective, increase support and spool industry to achieve this.

Through the annexations last year, in my opinion, the Russians burned the last bridge for any negotiations with the prospect of any outcome acceptable to Ukraine or her Western backers and especially us bordering Russia. https://twitter.com/Mortis_Banned/status/1733694093270659305#m

We need to talk more about:
What are the consequences if Ukraine looses and Russia wins?
For us in Europe, it would likely mean needing to prioritize defense spending in a manner no politicians today can fathom, with the risk of war being real.

The key to achieve this is political will.
If we, the West, really wants to we can do this and thereby increase the probability of avoiding the darker scenarios for the future.
In mobilizing this political will, the consequences of a Ukrainian loss needs to be highlighted.

I think "Russia would need X years to rebuild and pose a threat" leads to a false sense of security in many places.
Political dysfunction in the West and events elsewhere can throw a wrench in the works.
Iot face the most dangerous scenarios, actions must be taken today.

While there are escalation risks today, the war until now has shown that they are manageable.
It is not unrealistic that with a Russia emboldened by victory, with a full war economy and a military having learned from the war, things could look very different down the line.
