Many of the most knowledgeable foreign observers of the Russian-Ukrainian war do not have PhDs or significant military experience. They don't have traditional forms of credibility, so they won't get quoted in the media, but they are experts (and often know more than I do).

There is another issue. Our traditional forms of determining expertise for conflicts (e.g. PhDs or military experience) are often a poor indicator of understanding OSINT or recognizing OSINT expertise. It is a different skill set and OSINT literacy is a problem in academia.
